The legacy of John Birmingham, a much loved regular at The Cumberland Arms in Byker was to establish The John Birmingham Cup, a competition for songwriters of unaccompanied songs in the folk tradition. Past JB Cup holders include Jess Arrowsmith, Gavin Davenport and Jerry Simon.
Heats will be judged around the country in 2012, the winners of which will then compete in the final at Whitby Folk Week in August.
May 6th - Upton upon Severn Folk Festival (Heat 1) May 27th - Shepley Folk Festival (Heat 2) June 16th - The Cumberland Arms (Heat 3) August 22nd & 23rd - Whitby Folk Week (Heat 4 & Final)
The winner will receive a cash prize and a performance spot for their winning song at a Whitby Folk Week concert.
The JB Cup is not about the best singers it's about the best songs that get the whole room going, whether that be in tears or in a rousing chorus.

Application forms and copies of the rules will be available at Upton Folk Festival. To enter, bring £5 and a completed application form to Upton Festival Stewards Office.
