Subject: A song to cheer me up
From: GUEST,Ed
Date: 01 May 12 - 08:41 PM

I'm not going into details as to why, as it's quite personal, but I could really do with some musical life affirmation just now.

Any thoughts or youtube links much appreciated.

Thanks, Ed

How about song of the soul? Beautiful song with probably some of the worst lines anywhere..come to your life like a warrior don't let it bore yer...cover your ears when those lines come around and it might make you happier. mg

Watch that, a performance of Shostakovich's Waltz No. 2 for Variety Orchestra, I piece I never even heard of till this week. It's great.

I'm learning to play it on piano.

Thanks for the suggestion, mg. It did make me smile, but didn't much cheer me up...

Thanks also to leeneia, I understand where your coming from, and it's lovely music, but it's not quite my bag.

Thanks anyway

When I released my book and CD, The Song and the Sigh, Lisa Null commented that she appreciated an album filled with songs of hope. Honestly, I hadn't thought about it in exactly those terms, but if it helps, here's a song from that CD.

For that matter, here's one of my older songs.

Of course, there's always the blues. As Charles Schulz once said, "Happiness is a sad song."

I sure hope you feel better.

I don't know why, but this always cheers me up. Maybe it's because no matter what Pete sings, it cheers me up. Still:

Ed, when you go to Dan's ReverbNation link, stay long enough to listen to him singing Lois Lyman's "Going On".

Thanks Maeve. The "Going On" song has helped me through some of the toughest periods of my life.

And it helps that it's written by one of the world's loveliest human beings.

I think the recommnedations that work for you may depend on which side ofthe Atlantic you're from ...

One that may work on either side is "How Can I keep From Singing?" Although it is religious, it's also quite inspirational for the non-believer.

Keep singing!

When I'm feeling low I often feel better after listening to a song that lets me have a good cry. ("Place to be", "Follow me 'ome", "Child among the weeds" - depends on the occasion really.) But when I'm feeling low uplifting songs often make me want to cry ("Every star shall sing a carol", "Hal an tow", "Red wine and promises"...).

Almost by accident, I've just listened to "Handle me with care" by the Travelling Wilburys. Now that always cheers me up - probably because it's about being on your last legs but still going.

Sydney Carter's "Lord of the Dance" sung by Tommy Makem, and "Hal An Tow" sung by The Watersons make me cheery, as much for the tunes as the words. You can find them on Youtube.

THE EENSIE-WEENSIE SPIDER
(Tom Smith, Bob Blue, Trad.)

The eensie-weensie spider went up the water spout
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the eensie-weensie spider climbed again
She wouldn't let the elements distract her from her goal
The purpose of her struggle was imbedded in her soul;
Now see the sun shine down on beasts, on women and on men
And see that eenie-weensie spider rise again!

cho: Rise again! Rise again!
She will not let misfortune keep her
From doing what she can.
So whether your legs number two, or four or eight or ten
Be like that eensie-weensie spider,
Rise again!

This eensie-weensie metaphor's a lesson to us all
We cannot be defeated if we rise each time we fall
And if you think this story's one you learned too long ago
Then think about some other ones you know:
You know the myth of Sisyphus, and you know Jack and Jill
It's such a potent image, going up and down a hill.
So every time you fall,or lose a lover or a friend
Be like that eensie-weensie spider,
Rise again!

Perhaps you think this allegory goes a bit too far
Climbing up a pipe is not like reaching for a star
But whether it's a water spout or mountain that you climb
You've come this far. Indulge me one more time,
It could be said that each of us climbs up a water spout
The downward pull of gravity's not what it's all about
The upward pull of hope is what will save us in the end
Be like that eensie-weensie spider
Rise again!

Final chorus:
Rise again! Rise again!
Never let misfortune keep you
From doing what you can,
And whether your legs number two
Or four or eight or ten
Be like that eensie-weensie spider,
Rise again!

Ed (Guest)- you requested "some musical life affirmation" Never Be the Sun, written by Donagh Long, does it for me. I hope it does for you, too. Here's a link to Dolores Keane's version on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPUv_nRIaRw - (or search for Never Be the Sun in YouTube!)
