Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Garden Valley (Dougie MacLean) From: RunrigFan Date: 19 Sep 11 - 11:30 PM This is really not my home Oh where are you my lovely Jenny? I'm afraid and all alone There is no peace for me And I'm sitting in the stranger's room Playing at the stranger's table Shining empty like the moon There is no peace for me But in the darkness struggle cold I think about a garden valley Gentle as the leaves unfold Singing out along the Tay Distant and so far away There is no peace for me I'm blinded by your city lights I wander through these fearful places The colours fade to black and white There is no peace for me And these are not the friends I know These are not their smiling faces A desert that no-one should know There is no peace for me But in the darkness struggle cold I think about a garden valley Gentle as the leaves unfold Singing out along the Tay Distant and so far away There is no peace for me Now I know and feel it well Poor immigrants' deep sunken feeling Standing at the gates of Hell There is no peace for me Burned out by their master's greed Cruel exile transportation Robbed of every love and need There is no peace for me But in the darkness struggle cold I think about a garden valley Gentle as the leaves unfold Singing out along the Tay Distant and so far away There is no peace for me |

Subject: Lyr Add: GARDEN VALLEY (Dougie Maclean) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Sep 10 - 09:37 AM Copied from http://www.thelyricarchive.com/song/879120-119074/Garden-Valley GARDEN VALLEY Dougie Maclean 1. This is really not my home. Where are you, my lovely Jenny? I'm afraid and all alone. There's no peace for me. And I'm sitting in a stranger's room, Playing at the stranger's table, Shining empty like the moon. There's no peace for me. CHORUS: But in the darkness, struggle, cold, I think about the garden valley, Gentle as the leaves unfold, Sitting out across the Tae, Distant and so far away. There is no peace for me. 2. I'm blinded by your city lights. I wander through these fearful places. The colors fade to black and white. There is no peace for me. And these are not the friends I know. These are not their smiling faces, The desert that no one should know. There's no peace for me. 3. Now I know and feel it well, Of emigrant's deep sunken feeling, Standing at the gates of hell. There's no peace for me. Burned out by their masters' greed, Cruel exile, transportation, Robbed of every love and need, There's no peace for me. [Several people have recorded this: De Danann, Cara Dillon, Tommy Fleming, David Menefee, David Munnelly, Cathie Ryan, and of course Dougie himself.] |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: garden valley-Dougie Maclean From: Commander Crabbe Date: 26 Sep 10 - 06:33 PM As I understand it, it seems to be written in the context of him being away from home on tour living in a hotel or B&B in a city somewhere lonely and missing his wife. This would make the second line correct. The last verse is related to the highland clearances where many were evicted from their homes and transported to America and the like. It seem to be expressing a knowing of how they felt. Any way that's just my opinion, I'm sure there are a few more! Subject: Lyrics: garden valley-Dougie Maclean From: GUEST Date: 26 Sep 10 - 04:25 PM All the websites (including Dougies) have: This is really not my home Oh where are you my lovely Jenny? As the first two lines, wheras the second line sounds as though it aught to be: With you my lovely Jenny Whereas Dougie actually sounds like he sings: Will you my lovely Jenny ...which grammatically seems odd. BTW I have continued to try and seek membership here but the registration system says I am already registered (whi I am sure I am). Subject: Lyr Req: GARDEN VALLEY (Dougie MacLean) From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Mar 10 - 12:23 PM I found the lyrics online and adjusted them a bit to agree with what Cara Dillon sings on the YouTube video. (See The Villan's link above.) GARDEN VALLEY Dougie MacLean 1. This is really not my home. Oh, Where are you, my lovely Johnny?* I'm afraid and all alone. There's no peace for me. I'm sitting in a stranger's room, Playing at the stranger's table, Shining empty like the moon. There's no peace for me. CHORUS: But in the darkness, struggle, cold, I think about a garden valley, Gentle as the leaves unfold, Singing out across the bay,** Distant and so far away. There's no peace for me. 2. I'm blinded by your city lights. I wander through these fearful places. Colours fade to black and white. There's no peace for me. These are not the friends I know. These are not their smiling faces. In a desert that no-one should know, There's no peace for me. 3. Now I know and feel it well, The poor emigrant's deep sunken feeling. Standing at the gates of hell, There's no peace for me. Burned out by their masters' greed, Cruel exile, transportation, Robbed of every love I need,*** There's no peace for me. [* "Johnny": some sources have "Jenny" (depending on who's singing it, of course). ** "across the bay": some sources have "along the Tay." *** "love I need": some sources have "love and need"--which doesn't quite make sense. How do you rob somebody of a need? Anyway, Cara Dillon clearly sings "I." Recorded by Dougie MacLean, De Danann, Cara Dillon, and a few others.] |
