Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 07 Jul 12 - 10:08 AM That's great, Jim. I like it! I esp. enjoy the little swoop on the first note of the violin. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 06 Jul 12 - 06:22 PM Here's a link to a recording of Robbie Burns Day from Zeke Mazurek's album I Ain't Dead Yet II. Zeke is playing fiddle, I am playing mandolin, Danny Greenspoon is on guitar and Randall "Rockin' Randy" Kempf is on bass. Robbie Burns Day on ezFolk |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 25 May 12 - 10:13 AM As Leeneia has pointed out in a previous post, there are more than one set of chords that go with tunes like this, but here are the ones that I use. While Ken Ramsden and Michael Kettemer of Freshwater Trade use the same chords for the A part, I think they have a different set for the B part. I've sent them an email to see. A: Am G Am /,... B: C G F C, Am G F G, C G F C, Am G Am / |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: Stewart Date: 24 May 12 - 07:07 PM and here's the midi I'm still looking for an easy way to convert either mwc or midi to abc. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 24 May 12 - 06:51 PM I'd love for someone to post either the version on Zeke Mazurek's CD which I linked above on myspace or the version by Freshwater Trade from their first album. They play it as part of a set with Sailor's Wife and Banish Misfortune. I used to play it as a set with The Swallowtail jig. Leeneia, My real name is Jim Yates. I'm from Port Hope, thus PHJim. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,Auldtimer Date: 24 May 12 - 03:07 PM As for the tune sounding Irish !! I think it has more of an English sound, a bit Northumberland or Newcastle, North east anyway. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 May 12 - 02:55 PM Oh, your "dots" weren't a MIDI. I sent a MIDI to Joe, and he should post it here in time. If some kind soul would convert that to abc, then we will have both versions so people can play it. I like the way you can repeat sections of the tune and use different chords different times. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 May 12 - 02:51 PM There are people here at the Mudcat who can convert MIDI to ABC. Perhaps they will do it with your MIDI. I looked into it a little just now, but nothing seemed very straightforward. I do hesitate to install music software which might interfere with my present equipment. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: Stewart Date: 24 May 12 - 12:24 PM Leeneia Here's the dots for the tune I don't know where the doted quarter note A in the second and subsequent measure came from - it happened in the conversion from nwc through midi to abc. I don't have an easy way of doing that now. I used to use abc2nwc but it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7. So I had to do it in a convoluted way - through midi. Very frustrating. If you could tell me an easy way to get from nwc to abc I would be very grateful. In any case, it's a nice tune. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: Jack Campin Date: 24 May 12 - 11:31 AM Nice tune - very Irish and not at all like anything Burns would have known, though. Looking at Irish birthdays for that date, you've got a choice between Daniel Maclise the painter and Robert Boyle the chemist. Why not a Robert Boyle Day? - how many scientists get a day named after them? (The obvious one is FaraDay, September 22). |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 May 12 - 11:05 AM Stewart, there's an error in the abc which occurs seven times. See the second measure? See the fourth note, which is an A? That note should be a quarter note, not a dotted eighth. This should be easy to fix, because every dotted eighth in the abc is wrong and needs to be changed to a quarter note. I don't want to sound crotchety, but without the correction the measures do not have the right number of beats. I'm going to ask Joe to post the MIDI I made, so catters can hear the tune. Keep in mind that the MIDI is mechanical and does not convey the true lilt of the piece. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 May 12 - 10:03 AM I've been playing the song on my piano this morning and working out the chords. It's a fine, fine tune. Everybody, get our your instruments and have at it. If you don't mind giving your real name on the Internet, I will enter it onto the MIDI I made of the tune, so people will know you have the copyright. If not, I'll just say PHJim. Thanks for posting. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 23 May 12 - 09:39 AM I could try to email you a MP3. I'm not too computer savvy. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 May 12 - 09:22 AM I can get to the page, but I can't get it to play. Thanks for trying though. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 22 May 12 - 05:19 PM Here's the only link I could find Leeneia. I hope you don't have to be signed in to myspace to play it. Robbie Burns Day |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 May 12 - 11:30 PM I'm always interested in enjoyable new tunes. Can you post a MIDI, gif or an abc? I'd be interested to hear how it goes. |

Subject: Tune Req: Robbie Burns Day From: PHJim Date: 21 May 12 - 09:30 PM I was doing some googling and ran across this closed 6 year old thread that I hadn't seen before. It asks about a fiddle tune, a jig called Robbie Burns Day that the poster says sounds more like an Irish tune. I believe that this is a tune that I wrote in Port Hope, Ontario about 15 years ago. I wrote it on January 25, but didn't realise that it was Robbie Burns Day till my wife told me, thus the name of the tune. I introduced it to the Irish session in Peterborough and the members of Freshwater Trade asked me if they could include it on their first album. A few years later, Zeke Mazurek included it on his second album, I Ain't Dead Yet II and invited me to play mandolin on it. I'm not sure if the original poster is still interested, but if he/she is, I can post it and link it here. Robbie Burns Day |
