Subject: Chippenham 1st timer- who's going/tips? From: GUEST,Noreen Date: 28 May 12 - 10:15 AM Hi, Going to Chippenham Festival this weekend for the first time, dancing and playing with Wild Thyme Border Morris, and hoping for lots of singing :) Who's going, and where do the singers go? The website says (almost) all the pubs have music, so we may be spoiled for choice? |

Subject: RE: Chippenham 1st timer- who's going/tips? From: Mo the caller Date: 28 May 12 - 12:15 PM We will be at Chester this year - it's within walking distance. But I do miss Chippenham. The Cause is a converted chapel with marvellous acoustics. There are a lot of unamplified concerts (many with chorus singing), in the chapel and in the meeting room. And tea, cakes, sandwiches and a bar to keep you going. Full programme here though I'm sure there are unofficial sessions too. For those who find playing in sessions a bit intimidating read Valmai's thread She has workshops on tunes often heard in sessions, and you can get the dots in advance. |

Subject: RE: Chippenham 1st timer- who's going/tips? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 01 Jun 12 - 06:57 PM Hi Noreen. As I said in another thread, there is a rare opportunity on Saturday evening (6.30pm) to catch Mick Ryan's song-cycle story of the workhouses, which was commissioned by the Southwell folk festival and premiered last year in the grounds of the workhouse that inspired it (now a National Trust museum). Catch it if you can. It doesn't come out of wraps too often and you will see some fine performers - not least Mick himself, and the wonderful musician and guitarist Paul Downes. And this will be one of the rare occasions when the cast is joined by members of Thoresby Colliery brass band. (I am sometimes equivocal about brass instruments accompanying folk, as in Bellowhead and Brass Monkey, but they work really well with Mick's songs.) If it's not sold out, be sure to include it in your festival itinerary! The Pauper's Path. |
Subject: RE: Chippenham 1st timer- who's going/tips? From: Mo the caller Date: 04 Jun 12 - 02:33 AM The Pauper's Path team must like travelling. Mick was on at Chester last night, and they are doing the show this afternoon. We sat in a soggy marquee with puddles round our feet and a cold wind on our knees. (But he was worth hearing) Have you got proper Festival Weather at Chippenham too? |
