It's been awhile since I last posted in the forum. I'm living in Florida now and performing regularly at festivals, song circles and open mics. Retirement is a very relaxing way to spend time. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow for too many extra expenses. Tawmmie and I will not be able to come again this year, I'm sorry to say. The fee is more than our retired budget can manage. I wish you all a funfilled weekend. Keep us in your thoughts.

I'm certainly looking forward to hearing Kat Logan's new trio "Meteora" featuring herself and her partner Jim Loney, and Will Brown. Kat is one of the best singers I've ever heard, and a long time friend from Maine. I hope she still does some Kate Wolf songs. I also love her own "dream songs."

Some good ideas here, but a bit late in the game. Program planning is now in its final stages, and there's no more room for workshops. We hope to have a preliminary schedule grid ready in a couple of weeks (gulp!) and will make it public shortly thereafter. Rest assured, it's gonna be great!

We have done something like "chain reaction:.... called it 'follow the leader', and it 'can' be great.. or a flop, depending on who is there.
Those who a have wide variety of songs in regular use have great fun with this, but I have seen it degenerate into reading words from 'that book'.....

How about a chain reaction workshop? The idea would be for the leader to start off with any song at all, and then the floor would be open, but there would have to be some connection between each song and the one that preceded it. For example, the session could kick off with Missouri Borderland by Joe Newberry. The next song could be another song about bank robbing, or a song about Missouri, or about borders, or another song by Joe Newberry. The more abstruse the connection, the better.

Edmund and I are each learning a new song for the Napoleon workshop. My brain is now so full of the chord progression for his song it doesn't have room for the tune and lyrics of mine.

I would still like to have a workshop on "Feeding the Muse"- ways to get ideas for songs/poems ( lyrics) and developing them.

Tried this many years back, but even with chocolate and ginger there were too many other sessions at the time for it to get a critical mass of people.

Well, we're in the middle of the Civil War (v. 1.5; 150 years), and 1812 (200 years), not to forget Woody Guthrie's 100-year celebration, so I see lots of possible workshop topics from those.

Have we explored songwriting in a while? I don't recall that in the more recent 'ways.

If we have Appalachian musical guests, and New England musical guests, how about a compare & contrast workshop on singing or instrumental styles, content, etc.?

The Beans feature harmony singing, so that's a thought, too. Is Sally Rogers coming? A workshop that APPLIES some of her thoughts from the last two years could be good, too -- for that matter, even if she's not there it could happen.

Have we had actual instrumental styles or instruction or even upkeep workshops lately? I don't recall that many, in truth.

These are just some ideas that got through the mental haze (I'm at work, so folksong isn't foremost in my thoughts just now).

I know we've done workshops on the poems of Cicely Fox Smith before but last weekend at the Mystic Sea Music Festival we launched The Complete Poems of Cicely Fox Smith, edited by myself and Jim Saville, published by Little Red Tree Publishing, 640 poems with notes, illustrations, short bio and other prefacing remarks and reviews. If there is interest I'd love to coordinate another workshop and demonstrate how some of the poems have been adapted for singing; already some 90 poems have been so adapted and recorded, some in multiple versions.

The Getaway Program Committee (Carly Gewirz, Kathie Mack, and I) are already working on plans for the 2012 FSGW Getaway, and we're ready for your input.

This year's Getaway will be held September 28-October 1 at West River Conference Center on the Chesapeake Bay, and you're all invited!

If you'd like more information about the Getaway, just put "Getaway" in the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2 or 3 years, and you'll get more information than anyone could reasonably read. Very soon there will be still more information, and an application form, on the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW) web site (www.fsgw.org).

One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but we can't do that until we know who's coming and what they want to do. So -- please tell us if you're coming, and if so, what workshops and activities you'd like to see on the program.

We have a fine line-up of Special Guests this year: Ann Mayo Muir and her daughter Christina Muir, who were with us for one day last year, will be back for the whole weekend; One of our favorite singing families, The Beans, will join us; we'll be welcoming Appalachian musicians Jon Newlin and Amy Davis; and we'll introduce you to a wonderful trio from Maine, "Meteora" (Kat Logan, Jim Loney, and Will Brown). Now we're starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've already thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions!

So, if you're planning to come, let us know that, and tell us what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops from previous years you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and though not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only two days, after all, so please don't assume that just because something's been suggested here, it will necessarily end up on the program), we do promise to consider any and all suggestions. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me.

Just so things don't get too far out of control, please reserve this thread for program ideas. Other getaway topics can be posted elsewhere. Thanks!
