Sad to read that the comedian Eric Sykes died today aged 89. R.I.P.

What a shame, made us laugh with good clean humour. He and Hattie were a great double act. Remember them with affection. RIP

Rog

You could always tell when he helped Spike with the 'Goon Show' scripts, because there was something that might be described as a plot, and I think most of those involved enjoyed those where he collaborated even more than Spike's solo efforts.

Another part of my childhood gone. Eric seemed to be involved in so many of the radio comedy programmes that were popular when I were a lad.
Either as a performer, or as a scriptwriter.
What a pity his gentle funny style of comedy has almost totally gone, to be replaced by mockery of the slow, and inadequate, in society.
The exagerration, and subsequent sending up of stereotypes, and the hiding behind one character to say things they might not say otherwise.
Eric you will be sorely missed in this household.

RIP

I remember seeing "The Plank" in the cinema with my parents. It was supporting another film and now I have no idea what the other film was. A very funny man. RIP.

The get-together of Eric(Sykes)Hattie(Jaques)& Corky(Derek Guyler) should bring some joy to the angels.

R.I.P. May he hear in heaven (to miss-quote Beethoven)

Apoart from the wonderful 'Plank@ and the tv shows I liked him in 'Shalako' and 'The Others'. A very talented and funny man.
RIP Mr. Sykes.

I know it's a bit fanciful, but I would love to think you're reunited with Spike and the others . . .

RIP Eric, thanks for all the laughs and the fun.

Wonderful comedy of course, both as a writer and performer, but also a very respectable guitarist, usually on an arch-top for TV purposes, though his real love was flamenco. He was taught by the great Ivor Mairantz.

He had a wonderful knack for silent comedy; he could have us i stitches with a look, a gesture or just a well-timed pause. I can't think of anyone who comes close today.

Really sad news. That's about it now, I think they have all gone and 'comedy' is now in the hands of self opinionated foul mouthed arseholes like Rick Gervase and Jimmy Carr.

His autobiography is good reading and true to his wonderful humour is called "If I don't write it nobody else will!"

It's hard to think of guys like these being dead. They leave so much behind. It's a shock to realise that he was 89 - he will always be much younger in my recollection.

RIP Eric.

Great comedian and comedy writer. Shame about the Rhodesia connection. Someone had to say it.

There IS no Rhodesia connection. He played there at the time of UDI - so what - Britain was trading with Rhodesia at the time.

I never really 'got' him. They used to say he was influenced by Jacques Tati - I didn't 'get' him either.

Apparently he wrote some of the early Hancock scripts. Hancock, I loved.

I would rather spend half an hour in the company of Eric Sykes, than half an hour in the company of Robert Mugabe.
