I am looking for recordings (or transcripts) of carnival barkers, circus announcers, vaudeville performers, etc. Has anyone ever treated this as folklore? Are there collections?

Good place to start is Google.

Try googling each separately.

recording: carnival barkers
recording: circus announcers
recording: vaudeville performers

What I'd really like to do is record a full-length with a side-show talker/carnival barker introducing each song . . . "step right up and see the Human Pancake!!!" (for example) . . .

WE did a video/audio tape of a performance of Rosas Traveling Circus back in the 1970s in Michigan. It was more of vaudeville show at that time. Not sure if you'd be interested but I could try to find it. Evidently the Circus is still doing bookings.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

One kind of announcement I always found mind-blowing was the chanted race commentaries you got on the radio in New Zealand (and probably other places). The commentators had discovered you could convey the progress of the race faster if you delivered it in a kind of high-speed plainchant. The only other place I've heard words come out at a similar speed is in some kinds of Koran recitation.

Bingo calling?

Auctioneers?
