I'll be in Chicago from August 3 to August 12, and looking for music parties and open sessions for both weekends and in between.

My thanks to the Chicago Maritime Museum folks for providing a venue for the C. Fox Smith special event.

I haven't been to Chicago for years and I'd love to have a "Seven Wonders Tour", akin to what Utah Phillips would ask for when he parachuted in for a concert.

One of the folks I'll be connecting with is Tom Kastle who I've met at the Mystic Sea Music Festival. Tom no longer is resident in Chicago but he's coming in for the above event and promises to take me out for a round at a neighboring pub afterwards. Maybe we can even find a place where we could swap some songs.

I'm not having any luck finding a sea music session. There are a couple of open mic sign-up sessions I've reviewed via the internet, one at the Uncommon Ground on Monday evenings and another at the Red Line Taps on Thursdays. I may try one out but I'd appreciate some feedback if anyone is familiar with either of them, or even a better one.

We fly out this Friday!

Evidently there are no Mudcatters resident in Chicago who are interested in this event. Not to worry, we may encourage a new group to post here in the aftermath.

We've been spending the day trying to upgrade my old netbook so that I can stay in communications with Facebook and Mudcat. Lord knows what's the problem but we've finally decided to shift over to one of Judy's newer netbooks (don't ask why she has 3 of them!), and leave my old one on the compost heap...RIP

I'll try to keep a journal of what the Chicago experience is, whatever it is!

Back to packing!

Judy and I are safely embedded in Chicago in the Silversmith Hotel. The flight from Portland to Chicago was great but it took us almost as long to take the shuttle bus in from the airport to downtown Chicago, 2 hours! But we had a lovely Italian dinner and tomorrow we get to do some exploring.

An exciting update: we have achieved bagels,coffee and a newspaper. What a city!!!

And around the block they offer live acoustic music at a coffee place from 1-2 pm. We may check it out.

Well, the sandwiches were good but I don't think there was anyone in the place listening to the young woman sing other than us. I'm not sure the diners would be any more attentive to a 70-year old singing songs of the sea, but who knows? I could always launch into the Lincoln Park Pirates or Fresh-Water Whaling.

I'm secured our day passes on the Blue Line for Tuesday's foray, and a detailed chart of downtown Chicago. Nothing can go wrong!

Then suddenly the skies turned black late yesterday afternoon and rain poured down in torrents. Judy was out shopping but managed to catch a taxi just in time but thousands of Lollapalooza festival goers were swept out into Lake Michigan, never to be seen again. So sad!

Today we join an old friend from Michigan for lunch, catch up on what we've been doing since the 1970s.

Looks as if everything is set for this event at the Chicago Maritime Museum. I'll be checking in late afternoon to touch base with Don Glass, dropping my banjo off, and then we wander down to Greektown for a bite to eat. I've not a clue how well attended this event might be but we are prepared for hundreds, dozens, even two or three!!!
