I remember Steelye Span on Jim'll Fix It, back around '76 - as I remember it, Martin Carthy sat sideways on with his hand not just over his ear but his whole profile. Still, I imagine it paid well. (Or were these shows done for the love of doing a good turn?)

Sorry, Emma - I must have got you mixed up with Gemma Kidney, renowned citizen journalist and blogger-about-town.

'Then in my early 30s I got into the hard stuff: Nick Jones and Dick Gaughan.'

That was me at fourteen.

Does anyone else remember Steeleye Span on 'Jim'll Fix It' in 1978 singing the 'Boar's Head Carol' with two girls who'd asked to meet them? Carthy's face was a thing of wonder, as I recall.

Tsk, tsk, Gemma - everyone knows it's Dic Guaghan.

'Dear Jim, can you fix it for me to play with Richard Thompson at the Cambridge Folk Festival? I'm not very good but I'm a celebrity so no-one will notice. Besides, I'm an actor so I'm entitled to expect people to think I can do anything. Yours, Stephen Mangan'.
