Just wondered if anything's happening the Friday before Whitby, 17th, either in Whitby itself or in driving distance?

Thanks,

Joy

There's a pre-Whitby Festival Night at Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club   :)

There may be something on in the Dolphin by the bridge, east side.

Possibly the Dolphin, probably the Black Horse, not sure about the Fleece the new licensees are not folk friendly although they will maintain they are for folk week the favourite tune of landlords being "That ol' Rattlin' Till"

I was going to ask about the rugby club which is where we've been given a camping spot this year. After a long drive up from deep dark Essex and the setting up of camp, we won't fancy venturing too far on Friday night (or rather we won't fancy the uphill hike back from town). Anything going on in or around the club -apart from quiz night although that might be fun?

I usually camp at the Rugby Club( though not this year) and there has never been anything at the club on the first Friday night because the Rugby club is still being used by the regular club members. There is a bus which I think runs every half hour from the White Leys road round the back of the playing field although it is probably not running at the time you would want to return from the town ( but may be useful later?). If you walk back along Upgang Lane there are no hills, just turn left into Love Lane when you cross the old railway bridge and come out at the back of the playing field.

:) If you're not on your own, or know other people on the Rugby Club campsite who also want to 'session hunt' on the Friday it would be reasonably cheap to share a taxi into town, the fare would be about £5 or £6 ( not too bad divided between 3 or 4 people) but probably double that if you're returning to the campsite after midnight.

For anyone just wanting short, level stroll followed by a drink there's
The White House , Upgang Lane, YO21 3JJ, next to the Golf Course. Don't think they've anything Folky on but it's the nearest pub to the Rugby Club :)

I do wish the Rugby Clun had better showers. I would stay there if they did.

Thanks to Geoff Lawes and Ann N for your advice, particularly the easy route back to the club. At our first Whitby, two years ago, we managed to find the most up and down routes to any session before we worked out the short cuts.

Straight from the horse's mouth (the landlord, Wesley!).
Every evening, from Saturday 18th - 25th, there will be an open session led by 'Perish the Thought' (you know who they are!), with the exception of Wednesday 22nd.
Apparently there are many sessions of various types being held during the day - see programme, notice boards, flyers for further info. Evening sessions will kick off about 7:00 - 7:30 pm each night.
The ale and apple juice is real, and well priced.
Let's have a Folkin' good time!

Charliestu & friends
