Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Janie Date: 31 Aug 12 - 08:18 PM There are going to be a number of folks headed back to the NC Piedmont post Getaway. Some traveling through briefly, some staying a few days in the vicinity, and some of us who actually live here! Suggest a "meeting" at the Getaway to coordinate "something" post Getaway that can include as many travellers as travel and local work schedules permit. Genie, Art and Jen, Abby, Dani, Amos, Chance and Suzette, Micca (anybody else?) Propose sitting together at lunch or supper on Saturday to compare schedules. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Rapparee Date: 31 Aug 12 - 08:54 PM Is it possible to get a ride from BWI to Getaway on Friday and back again on Monday (times TBA)? I'll have a suitcase, bass fiddle and my Sousaphone. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Aug 12 - 09:07 PM All registered! We're running down to Richmond after Getaway. We may have room for one person in the Outback. Charley Noble and JudyB |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Amos Date: 01 Sep 12 - 12:12 AM Jacqui: Glad to--I had thought it was Gordon Lightfoot's, though. I do another of Alan Taylor's also. A |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Sep 12 - 04:21 PM Amos - you're probably right - I've got Alan's version of it so always associate it with him. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 02 Sep 12 - 01:35 PM Amos, I don't suppose you ever learned "Icarus"? No? Then play me some Richard Thompson...pretty please? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Sep 12 - 01:41 PM In years past we have been able to offer overnight space to travelers on the way to and from-- not this year. Stuff happening! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 04 Sep 12 - 06:25 PM Have there been any thoughts of a pre-Getaway singaround/sleepover this year? I'll be picking Micca up at Dulles early Thursday afternoon, and I haven't yet made hotel reservations for either of us for Thursday night. Just curious... Thanks, Claire |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Bill D Date: 04 Sep 12 - 08:00 PM Claire.... I have never gone to one of the Thursday sings, as we are always "getting ready"... but we ARE halfway (timewise) between Dulles & the Getaway. (we are in Wheaton, a few miles off I-495 north of DC) If nothing else seems to be happening, don't spend $$ on a hotel ..unless you just want to. We do have room for a couple people who don't mind OUR hectic last minute packing. Keep in touch as the month proceeds. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 04 Sep 12 - 09:41 PM Thanks Bill! Might just take you up on that. I'll let you know. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Amos Date: 05 Sep 12 - 09:22 AM Gene and Sandrolin are having a big Thursday aftenroon and evening shindig preGetaway in Silver Spring, following the best Shiver tradition. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: MMario Date: 05 Sep 12 - 06:15 PM I need to get registered! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 05 Sep 12 - 06:35 PM Yes, you do! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: RiGGy Date: 05 Sep 12 - 09:28 PM Claire ~! I'm going too! Can I snag a ride from a train station so I don't need to store a rental car 3 days in the event center lot ??? CALIFORNIA contingent ! Riggy |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 06 Sep 12 - 01:37 PM Riggy, Great that you're coming! Let's sing something... I sent you a PM. Not sure if you're asking me, or Mudcat at large, about a ride from the train... C |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Bill D Date: 06 Sep 12 - 06:10 PM Remember...or think about... the fact that many 'local' folkies never read Mudcat. A number of years ago, when a UK shanty group came over, we had months to plan and published the need for rides & accomodations in our newsletter. If nothing works out soon, Riggy, I will ask about locally. You are coming FROM California by train? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: artbrooks Date: 06 Sep 12 - 07:06 PM Riggy just refreshed the "Getting to the Getaway thread". Jenn and I are also coming via Amtrak, but we're stopping off for a couple of days in Pittsburg and then coming down with our daughter. We need a ride to the DC Amtrak or to a Metro feeder station, in time to catch the 3:00 pm south. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: artbrooks Date: 06 Sep 12 - 07:07 PM That would be on Monday. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 06 Sep 12 - 07:10 PM Bill, Micca and I will happily take you up on your kind offer of a place to stay on Thursday. .Also, we can meet Riggy at the Royal Mile on Friday (he will take the Metro out from Union Station), and transport him from there. I've been exchanging emails with Riggy much of the day to that end. So we're all set! Thanks so much! Claire |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Bill D Date: 06 Sep 12 - 07:39 PM Great.... let us know if anything changes.. (as if I need to say that..*grin*) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Bill D Date: 06 Sep 12 - 07:48 PM Whoops... I am informed that the Royal Mile is 'gone'. There is another pub (Irish) just down the block, though. And... I live only a few minutes from there....and thus, from the Wheaton Metro station... so it makes a difference only if one intends to go to a pub. Anyway, easy enough to sort out on Thursday...(sorry, Micca... no expensive Scotch to be had this time... but I have some decent ones at home... ;>) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Bill D Date: 07 Sep 12 - 01:20 PM So...now my son informs me the Royal Mile IS reopened under new management. It won't change any plans much, but I hate false info. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Fortunato Date: 08 Sep 12 - 08:43 AM If you go please tell the server, Ann Marie, and all the bunch there, that Chance and Susette send their best. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Celtaddict Date: 08 Sep 12 - 01:33 PM So, Bill, Claire, Micca, if I bring the Scotch, and come down Friday, can we work something out? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 08 Sep 12 - 09:36 PM Always, my dear, but what did you want to work out? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Janie Date: 08 Sep 12 - 10:07 PM Looking forward to a lovely and empowering weekend. Don't forget to bring a little something for the auction and don't forget to bring a little something to spend on a little treasure you may find in the auction. Those scholarships matter! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: MMario Date: 10 Sep 12 - 11:35 AM Signed up - paid for and time requested off from work. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 11 Sep 12 - 12:53 PM Reserved a car ... the last -- and, this time, most expensive -- part of planning this year's Getaway journey. Thank you to the three people (Bill, Rita, and Ellen) who are saving me from hotels!!! CeltAddict, are you asking for a ride to the Getaway? Of course you may -- the more the merrier! But let me know if I'm misunderstanding your question. C |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Nancy King Date: 11 Sep 12 - 12:55 PM News flash! The 2012 Getaway schedule is now on line, here! Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), this schedule is subject to change. We hope we won't have to change it, but ya never know. If you are a workshop leader and we have you in two places at once, let us know pronto and we'll fix it. But, as I've said in past years, if you'd just like to BE in two (or more) places at once, well, join the club. Better too much than too little, eh? Looking forward to seeing all of you! Nancy |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: MMario Date: 11 Sep 12 - 01:22 PM Well - despite the lack of a cloning workshop as far as the Getaway itself goes I've only got three or four conflicts - that's good! now to figure out how to get in some time at the MD ren-faire in addition... ... |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Janie Date: 11 Sep 12 - 06:18 PM Up she goes! As usual, looks like a great schedule, Nancy. Many thanks to you hard working FSGW folks who volunteer your time every year to make sure this wonderful retreat happens! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Sep 12 - 08:44 PM Nancy- Thanks for posting a link to the schedule. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Celtaddict Date: 12 Sep 12 - 03:47 PM Actually, Claire et al, I meant to type Thursday, meaning if I make it down for the pre-Getaway gathering, anyone interested in sharing lodging or some such? Getting together Friday before Getaway is truly underway would be fun too. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Abby Sale Date: 12 Sep 12 - 05:12 PM Yea! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Janie Date: 15 Sep 12 - 12:01 PM Refreshing. Look at Nancy King's post 11 Sep 12-12:55 PM for a link to the schedule. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: kendall Date: 15 Sep 12 - 01:13 PM Just a reminder to anyone who wants to do the "Spoken word" set. We must keep each story, poem, down to no more than 5 minutes. I went to my 60th class reunion and one of the classmates went on and on ad nauseum about nothing and we ran out of time. Very irritating. Running over your time is the mark of an amateur. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Genie Date: 17 Sep 12 - 02:37 AM The scheduled workshops and mini-concerts look wonderful! (Now to figure out how to be 2 or 3 places at once. I have yet to master that.) So glad Pete Kraemer is doing a Woody Guthrie workshop. Can't let Woody's 100th year go by without that! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Sep 12 - 09:25 AM I'll be bringing along copies of The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith, if anyone is interested in providing a good home for one. After the Getaway I'll be doing a set of concerts and special events with Bob Zentz in Virginia related to our work with C. Fox Smith's nautical poetry. I'll also have songbooks and CDs that also feature her poems adapted for singing. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Dan Schatz Date: 17 Sep 12 - 01:48 PM We're signed up. This will be a grand experiment, with the three of us, and Kiran only 5. Here's hoping we don't catch his cold just in time for the Getaway. I really hope some folks bring younger children, in the 4 to 7 range. For DC area people, day registration is a great and affordable option for families, and the more families there are, the more we can pool our resources so the kids can have an adult keeping an eye on them while the other parents and grandparents enjoy the workshops. I understand why things have changed, but I really miss the days when I was a kid going to the Getaway, and there were enough kids running around that we could have lots of programming for us (I remember children's concerts with Bob Devlin at Prince William Forest), and so that we could run around together and feel totally free and comfortable. Admittedly 5 is a little young for that level of freedom, but it certainly is easier when there are more kids and families. Dan |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: kendall Date: 17 Sep 12 - 03:15 PM Dan, you wouldn't really bring a cold into a group of singers, would you? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: Dan Schatz Date: 17 Sep 12 - 04:21 PM Of course not. Hence the hoping. Dan |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2012 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 17 Sep 12 - 07:47 PM and PS: good for you for bringing the little ones! If I had 'em, I would. Mine are now too busy/broke/far away to come, but they have fond memories of the ones they DID make, and will, I'm sure, be back. Dani |
