Do you have the software to work (especially to print) with MIDI files? I have a MIDI file of the melody which is pretty good. There are a few glitches in the timing, but if you know the melody you can figure them out.

What key would you like it in? The present MIDI is in C, and it's too low for flutes.

If you want it, I will send it to Joe Offer, and it will appear right here in the fulness of time. You can right click to download it to your MIDI software.

It's beautiful song, and I wish I had the melody lines and chords for the beautiful arrangement in the video sponsored by ZIP.

The MIDI I speak of has only the melody line. It's in G, not C, and goes down to the B below middle C. The chords are the common or garden variety, but there is a lot of stepwise motion in the song, so they will take some thought.

Never mind, the MIDI isn't that good anyway. The MIDI in the Mudcat MIDI's is even worse. It's in the wrong time.

It's an odd thing. Despite the fame and lasting appeal of this song, the one thing I can't find on the net is somebody who's willing to SELL me a copy or a download of the score.

There are amateur, unauthorized lyrics and tabs and videos and mp3's, but the publishers who hold the rights are conspicuous by their absence. Yet they'd probably complain if somebody worked out the score and posted it.

They baffle me.

I have to admit I'm a beginner in this field.
I even didn't know what u meant by MIDI and how i can turn it into printable format (had to check it in wiki).
All I know is that this piece (I also didn't know that the name is six ribbons) is somehow my motivation to start adoring flute and learning to play it.
By the way what I need I guess should be in G.
And also I'm not a member here so i don't know how such things work here (all about Jack and stuff).

We better back up some.

If you don't have MIDI software, the MIDI file isn't going to help. I believe you should do these things in the following order:

1. See if you can get hold of a flute, either by renting, borrowing from school or buying it.

2. See if you even like playing flute. Flutes look cool, but they can be hard to play.

3. If flute above doesn't work out, try recorder. If money is scarce, look at the prices of plastic instruments. They can be quite nice.

Once you have settled on an instrument and can play a scale, come back here, request the song again, and we'll see what we can do about posting something.

Meanwhile, are you Australian? I ask because 'Six Ribbons' comes from Australia. If so, check out that link (above) to the Trove site, which shows copies of the song in the National Library. Perhaps your local library can get a copy of the song from them on your behalf.

Thanks for explaining about the flute you have put away. That makes everything much clearer. I can see how the song would inspire you to play again.


As far as I can tell, the page you linked has an mp3, which makes sound but doesn't produce a score. But don't worry about that.

I have a MIDI file which plays the version you hear at the end of the show. It plays the verses which have the form "If I were a __________, I'd give you a ____________." That's repeated a few times. Then it plays the part that goes "Julee, July, all love we share."

I'm missing the variation where he sings 'You'll never be lonely now." It's just too complicated, I'm afraid.

Key: the original key is too low for flute, so I changed it to C and then D. The song has a pretty big range - an octave plus a third. There are chords between the two keys so you know where the change is. Here's what we'll do.

1. I send the MIDI to Joe. Joe posts it.

2. Somebody will convert the MIDI to a format called abc

3. You copy the abc and go to a site (URL to be supplied) that converts it back to MIDI but also can print a copy.

4. You print the copy. It will not be great quality, but c'est la vie.

Be warned: If Joe is on a trip or something, it might take a while for the MIDI to appear. If it doesn't appear promptly, keep checking back. Like the wheels of the gods, we are slow but sure.
