Subject: Now we can ALL share MIDI files
From: Alan of Australia
Date: 23 Oct 99 - 11:06 AM

G'day,

I suppose it's about 2 years ago that I wrote MIDItext, a way of converting simple MIDI files into text, and back again, for Mudcatters to use in this forum. (The red text that you see in some threads.)

This seems to have filled a need, however not every mudcatter has been able to use it, particularly Mac users.

Now that it's possible to take advantage of free web space, I've created a site for MIDI files not yet in the Digital Tradition.

If you have a tune to post to a thread, email the MIDI file to me, Alison or Joe Offer & it will be quickly available for downloading.

MIDItext is still available of course, but it should be considered to be superseded by this web page.

Check it out here.

Advantages:

Users of operating systems other than microsoft can access the MIDIs.

So could people who are currently scared off by MIDItext.

We can share complicated MIDIs, including changing time signatures.

MIDIs remain easily accessible after the thread has disappeared into oblivion.

There's enough space to hold the entire Mudcat collection of midis if they are fairly simple with the occasional complicated one, although the main purpose would be to hold the ones not yet in the DT.

Disadvantage:

No ABC. There is good support available for ABC though at the ABC home page, including programs for converting between ABC and MIDI.

Cheers,
Alan

Alan
It doesn't sound enough just to say thanks but the facility will be appreciated by all I'm sure.
Thanks again
Baz

As Spock (of Star Trek) might say, "Impressive".

More than impressive, Alan. Brilliant, generous, just all around terrific. Especially for those of us who are Mac users. It makes me proud and happy to be a Mudcatter.

Alan, I have used my web space to share information, not only here (and not only my own work) but elsewhere for a while now and mentioned that use in a thead asking about Mudcatters home pages fairly recently.

I appreaciate the generosity of giving space but I can see several problems regarding using personal web space for this purpose. Is it your space or Mudcats that these Midis go to?

Jon

Jon,
I suppose technically that the space belongs to homepage.com. They make it available free & get their revenue from advertising. You'll notice a banner ad at the top of the page. Looking at it another way though, the space is mine as I'm the one who opened the "account". With 10 MB available we can store several thousand MIDI files containing melody only, somewhat less if we start posting more complicated ones.

Cheers,
Alan

And many thanks to THE FAIR ONE for her continuing efforts here - she's the one who posted most of the tunes to this site. Also many thanks to Joe for Offering to share the work load.

Cheers,
Alan

should be much easier for everyone to use... you don't have to do the converting from text stuff any more. Now if we can just convince John of Brisbane to put the tunes he has submitted into it too, (we'll help John, if you send us the MIDI files).

great job Alan....

Alan - will the page be put in the drop down box at the top of mudcat? And as a matter of mudiquette, should we post a note on the applicable thread - make a new thread that a midi has been added? (Curious because I want to add the tune to "Farewell! But Whenever You Welcome the Hour/Moll Rune."

I am a bit disappointed that ABCs won't be posted. While I prefer midi and I don't use ABC very much except to sometimes compare the music I have with earlier versions at Bruce's site (thank you Bruce!) - it is an extremely popular format with musicians and it would be nice to have a "one stop" place to find everything about a song.

I can but echo the thoughts of everyone here, especially ol' Seed.......A truly fantastic job, especially from someone who dresses in drag all the time. I bet your outfits are really creative too.

Thanks Spaw (I think), you can guarantee Spaw taking you the wrong way when he wants (gee Alison's underwear's a bit tight, especially in some places - I'm a lot bigger than she is, especially in some places).

Cheers,
Alan

Lesley,
Now that you mention it there's no reason why there can't be ABC tunes on the same site. The first time anyone emails me one I'll set it up.

Cheers,
Alan

Well done Alan and Alison, I've been very heavily committed to some performances which finished last Saturday night, so apologies I haven't had any time to devote to your excellent project. I have made a start on documenting the Midis I've submitted, many of which I'd completely forgotten about. I'll be as quick as I can. Regards, John

That's terrific Alan. My abc files don't turn out very well, but I'll submit them with the midis.

I think it's fantastic to have a site that's so easy to use. It's a lot of work! Thanks!
