Just visited Arkie's link (to EB singing Mattie Groves) and found her singing Silver Dagger as well.

It also gives this info about her:
Ebony Buckle is a talented musical theatre actress. She has a bachelor degree in Music and Opera Singing from the University of Queensland in Australia and a postgraduate diploma in Musical Theatre from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Her musical stage performances include Les Misérables, The Marriage of Figaro and the opera A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"with a voice that could make angels weep"

Wouldn't have guessed she's an Ozzie from hearing her sing!

Okay, the song with the lyric "we had it all every moment was painted in gold" is: "It's All Over" by Dave James, Adam Skinner and Dan Skinner (available on Itunes)

I don't know, I'm sorry! I've been searching on the Internet until I was blue in the face! Just glad I found the Audionetwork site. I'm quite willing to pay the small amount they want to download. Haven't done it yet though.
Hopefully someone else can help with the singer's name!

Hiya,

Well, I love EB's version of 'Silver Dagger'. Why won't she make a cd??!!
It does look like there won't be any more George Gently on TV – they didn't look like they'd survive that. I loved it. I've a friend who loves his cop shows, including GG, so he'll probably get the whole series & lend me it.

Good news for the music lovers!

I've learned from other websites that the guitar song that I was looking for in 'The lost child' is:
Mustang drive - Christian Marsac

Furthermore, the song with the lyrics "untouchable souls living life on the edge..." in 'Gently with class' is:
It's all over - Dan Skinner, Adam Skinner, Dave James

Both songs are available on www.audionetwork.com

Does anybody know the title and artist of the guitar song in George Gently - 'The lost child"? It is the part in which George and John are tracking down Susan and Hazel on the beach.

On this (Dutch) website you can find this episode which is available till 13 February: http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl/afleveringen/1323944.
The music starts at 20:05.

Is it on a website or archived anywhere on the internet?
Thank you.

AW wasn't that really Lewis????

Yes we do not know how badly the were wounded...... and knowing the way that TV can resurrect characters from the dead maybe there is more to come. I do hope so. I was getting to really enjoy it.

So........Gently Bently....!!

When will they get round to filming Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins Mysteries for TV? Single-mum-parish-priest-turned-diocesan-exorcist-with-folk-singing-boyfiend-&-pagan-daughter but mostly caught up with solving crimes in the real world - supposing Herefordshire is real - with lashings of spooky / folky / weirdlore and a splendid cast of regular characters besides.

As for George Gently - as an ex-pat Geordie I watched it once hoping for lots of familiar location shots around the old country only to be told it was all filmed in Ireland. I've watched it since but always seem to catch the same episode - or so my long suffering wife tells me - my short-term memory keeps me in a constant state of revelation. This one sounds a hoot though - I'll watch out for it on repeat, or else on my in-laws SkyPlus box.

Ah, but it wasn't Lewis really, you know....

... Are they dead? It was left just sufficiently open that they were just perhaps left lying there seriously wounded, but maybe not fatally, to lay the way open for a further series???

So ~~ Gently, now ---

I remember Jack Shepherd playing a bit of "Blue Monk" in a Wycliffe episode.
Watch out for the gentleman in "Mysterioso" if there is an Alan Plater retro-spective on UK tv.

hi mike

I don't know Jack Shepherd personally but I do think he is an excellent actor. His rather morose playing of Wycliffe is , I am sure just his portrayal of the Wycliffe character from the book. I think I read somewhere that Jack is a fine jazz pianist? Sometimes he does a little bit of "tinkling" in the series but these are usually limited to a few jazz chords and riffs.

WE like Lewis too. Although if you saw the Gently episode last night "Lewis was wiped out along with Gently and Baccus. lol

I have collected and recorded every single episode of Frost ( I know get a life !!) and have read all the books, though their are not many of them. This includes the latest one this year by James Henry who wrote it in memory of Rodny Wingfield who died in 2007.

So it looks like no more Gently on TV????!!!

Thanks for that, good bit of info. The Emily Buckle version in the programme was very much of the Fairport lineage ...

Hiya,

I much prefer the tougher sort of cop show. Modern ones are good, but if you really want to see me happy, recommend one set in the past.

I suspected the GG series was livened up a lot more, because Bacchus reminds me of Gene Hunt sometimes. I love seeing him lose his rag with a suspect –- I shouldn't think he does that in the GG books from what I've read here!

The only time I thought book = TV adaptation was Red Riding – I was desperate to read the books & wasn't disappointed. I've never been disappointed by David Peace's work. I'll stick with the series too; the music's great.

EB reminded me of the Melrose Quartet, both in looks & playing. That remains one of the few gigs – I think the only gig to date – where I didn't want the support band (said Quartet) to leave.

Hi Mike: I got fed up with the Midsomer series fairly early on; & have also rather gone off D&P lately. We enjoy Lewis [more than we used to Morse]; and I Frost, along with Gently, is the one I like best. Quite enjoy Wycliffe also ~~ and not just because Jack Shepherd once, when I was reviewing a 70s production production of John Osborne's Inadmissable Evidence at the Arts, Cambridge, in which he was playing the lead, missed his train home to London so came and spent the night on our futon in the Cambridge flat that Valerie & I lived in back then. Ah nostalgia...

Hi Mike

Yes the TV series are much better than the books. The have a new dimension that is missing in the written word. ....and Gently isn't forever munching chocolate peppermints on the TV !!!

I don't know how you feel about Midsommer Murders? I find that Carolyn Grahame who wrote the original stories gives one a really good read. Very much more deep into characterization and lots of delicious humour.
She did write many books about 8 I think but as you will know the TV series manage to squeeze out getting on for 100 now. IMHO Still good TV but I prefer the books.

On the same theme Reginald Hill who wrote the Dalziel (De'el) and Pascoe is also a hugely humorous writer. The TV series sticks much closer to the original stories than the other two authors. Hill for me is a great descriptive writer with great characters and a wicked eye for poking fun at people.

Unfortunately Reginald died earlier this year so we will (presumably) not be having any more of D & P.

Cheers

Looking back with nostalgia to a time when there was a folk club on every high street. I used to go to a folk club near London's Petticoat lane in the sixties ; there was another club located just around the corner competing wih it on the same evening – and they were both usually quite full from what I remember .
Is folk becoming a folk memory ? I hope not, but doubt whether they will be making a series set in a 2012 folk club fifty years from now .

Hi Mike

Yours is a fair appraisal of Alan Hunter's George Gently Does it.
Most of his works are very similar in content and I found them OK for very light reading and bedtime reading.

There are a reasonably long range ranging from -:

Gently in The Sun
Gently Down the Stream
Landed Gently etc etc.

The TV series are much better than the books. I usually find this the other way round.

I find them similar in the lack of literary content as the Wycliffe series. Although in this case the TV series is not a lot better than the books. Again good light reading if you like that kind of thing.

Cheers

On the topic of the books/tv:-

I took the trouble to get a copy of the first of the Gently novels, Gently Does It [1955]. Rather disappointed ~~ found it a bit mechanical and formulaic; no Bacchus; set in thinly-disguised Norwich, where the author ran a bookshop at the time, but little sense of locale or atmosphere. No particular characterisation, either of Gently or of the suspects &c. Compared with the classic detective novels of e.g. Sayers, it all appeared to me a bit lifeless, as if happening in a sort of social vacuum.

It was however the first of many and I expect some of the later would be more to my taste. Has any reader any particular recommendation[s]?

We're way behind on our PVR having gone completely Paralympics-crazy, and so only got around to watching this last night.

Enjoyed it a lot, Emily Buckle is a class act isn't she.

I know that the minutiae of historical accuracy always goes out the window on things like this in favour of dramatic framing, and I hasten to add it didn't spoil the programme for me at all: but how realistic was it that they'd all have been singing and playing into mics and a PA down at the local Northumberland folk club in 1968?

And, for that matter, how well known was that particular tune/words version of Matty Groves likely to have been in 1968, the year before Fairport immortalised it on Leige and Lief?
