What was it about the name Hank for recording artists in the middle of last century that was so popular? We had:

Hank Williams
Hank Snow
Hank Locklin

and there were probably more......while those who weren't named Hank were probably named Slim.

I bet most of you can still remember the words to a lot of their songs, too.

Cheers
JennieG

It's a hip, folksy, good ole boy name.
Short for Henry. Except Hank Williams name was Hiram.
Hi Jennie.

Thanks for mentioning Hank Penny. Great Western dance band.

In contrast, Spade Cooley was monkey junk.

Hank Thompson had a rockin' band. Wanda Jackson used to sing with them.

Spade Cooley? He beat and stomped his wife to death in a drunken rage. In front of their little daughter. Son House would say Spade Cooley knew all about the blues. Therefore, he was NOT monkey junk. He was the real thing.

Spade Cooley was from Oklahoma, but he was from a wealthy family and was well-trained in music, a violin player and arranger.

What he did was pollute real Western Swing with Classical Music cliches and Pop drivel.

OK, Spade Cooley's music was monkey junk.

Hank Penny and Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith had fine bands and made some great uniquely American music. Spade Cooley sucks.

I didn't say his music was good. Although he had a great steel player in Joachim Murphy. He knew what the blues was, though.

Hank Garland was a great guitar player. Could be called Jazz even though he played in Country Music.

Hank Ballard, anyone?

I recall a sitcom in the mid 60's called Hank. It didn't last. Pretty mindless. Does anyone else remember it? What was it about?

No much to add as it has pretty much been covered. Truly some great music came from these singers called "Hank".
H. Williams has to be the leader of all country composers for his time. I regard him as the greatest of all, but that's just me.

And he would have been 90 just recently, if he was still around. Wonderful songwriter - his songs are still popular. A few years ago while visiting Canada we saw the movie "The show he never gave" - it was an amazing movie, very good.

Cheers

Back in 64, George Hamilton stared as Hank Williams in "Your Cheatin' Heart". I must of seen it every night it played until they brought in another movie.
