Subject: Folk Music in LA?? From: emily b Date: 26 Oct 99 - 06:24 PM I'll be in Los Angeles around 11/2-11/5. Are there any good folk music venues near Santa Monica? Also, if anyone has any recommendations of places to see/places to eat, I'd appreciate that, too. You know, the perfect place to watch the sun set, the perfect canyon drive or hiking trail. Or just a good place for the "LA" experience. The guide books are overwhelming. And I don't want to go to Disneyland or Beverly Hills. Thanks for the help. Sure enjoy the site. Emily |

Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA?? From: emily b Date: 27 Oct 99 - 02:40 PM liam, I know what you mean. I live in Houston where the folk scene isn't particularly thriving either. I see from other threads that you are in Dallas. I think there is more music up there. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask about LA, you never know. I'll amuse myself quite well, folk music or not. Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA?? From: JedMarum Date: 27 Oct 99 - 02:47 PM emily - actually, like Randy Newman; I love LA. It is a great town. But I have been lucky enough to have friends there to show me around when I go. They always had their favorite places.
I have heard there are some really good folky singer/songwriter types in Houston. Do you know any of these folks: Back to LA. I hope you enjoy the trip, but I don;t think I can help ya find much there. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA?? From: JedMarum Date: 27 Oct 99 - 03:00 PM Emily - I have a good friend very involved with the LA music scene. He is a publisher, a songwriter, and performer. He would be pleased to give you a few pointers via Email. If you write me at liam_devlin@musician.org I will provide you his name and Email addr ... and I will tell him to expect to hear from you. OK? |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA?? From: Frank Hamilton Date: 27 Oct 99 - 04:51 PM L.A. was the home of Woody Guthrie for a few years. Odetta lived there. One of the most knowledgeable people in the whole field of folk music lives there. Bess Hawes, sister of Alan Lomax. McCabes in Santa Monica used to have folkie acts. This might be a good start. It's at 30th St. and Pico Boulevard. Check yellow pages for McCabes Guitar Shop. There is an organization called Songmakers that meets in private homes. Check Alta Vista. L.A. has been the home of the Dulcimer Festival and the Banjo and Fiddle Contest which used to be in Topanga Canyon, a rural suburb. Now I think it's held on UCLA campus in the summer. There is a Riverside Folk Song Club which meets in the burbs which in L.A. can be a considerable trek. Practically nothing is accessible on public transportation unless you have half a day to spend. Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA?? From: SeanM Date: 27 Oct 99 - 09:01 PM There are a few good "Irish" pub bands in LA. Gaelic Storm plays somewhere in Santa Monica (Sorry, I'm being lazy... search the web for their location), and my personal favorites The Fenians in Santa Ana (Orange County, but only an hour away). Hope this helps. M |
