Subject: Need Winter Song Titles, please!
From: GUEST
Date: 12 Oct 12 - 09:46 AM

Hi there. I hope the regulars don't mind a request from a relative newbie. I've actually hung around here for years, but I don't post much.

Anyway, in my other life, I'm the author of a fantasy series about a pair of Folk musicians who also practice magic. One of the conceits of the series is that every book shares its title with a trad song (The Unquiet Grave, A Maid in Bedlam, etc). I'm working on the fifth book, and I'm totally stuck on a title.

It takes place between the Winter Solstice and the First of January, and it deals with unnaturally bad weather that has a mystical component. So, I'm looking for songs about Winter, Snow, Winter Hardship, etc.

Please, please please help. I'd appreciate any suggestions. All I can think of is "The Month of January," which won't work because it isn't January, and "The Snows they Melt..." which won't work because the snow isn't melting at all.

Thank you.

Visit JC's abc tune finder or The Session.org and do searches on likely words. Then make sure the titles you consider are public domain.

Must it be a song? How about Shakespeare's "When Icicles Hang by the Wall?"

Shakespeare

Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.

Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho! the holly! This life is most jolly.

Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
Thou dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember'd not.

Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho! the holly!
This life is most jolly.
As You Like It,2.7.181-201)

Winter Song

When icicles hang by the wall
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail
And Tom bears logs into the hall
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipp'd and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-whit; Tu-who, a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

Love's Labour's Lost,5.2.932-39

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

There are tunes for both....Mr. S used over a hundred songs in his plays.

I hate to admit it, but it's been so long since I posted here that I can't remember my name...

I LOVE that bit from As You Like It, by the way. I'm liking "The Bitter Sky." Kind of out of the usual line, but it has a great ring.

I love "Hunting the Wren" as a book title, too. But I think that may have to be for later.

Cream:

t is a cold winter,
Away is the songbird.
And gone is her traveller,
She waits at home.

The sun is on holiday,
No leaves on the trees.
The animals sleep
While cold North wind blows.

The snowflakes are falling,
The roof a white blanket.
There's ice on the window pane,
She waits alone.

She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.
Her children are sleeping,
She waits in their home.

Passing the time.
Passing the time.
Everything fine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, everything fine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, everything fine.
Passing the time, wine and time rhyme.
Passing the time.

It is a long winter,
Away is the summer.
She waits for her traveller
So far from home.

She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.
There's ice on the window,
She's lonely alone.

There's some real imagery in Tommy Thompson's
"Hot Buttered Rum"

John Prine's "Christmas In Prison"
Bob Gibson & Tom Paxton did "Box Of Candy And A Piece Of Fruit"

No Christmas gift I've ever come by,
Whether trains or homemade socks,
Has haunted me like one sweet orange
And some candy in a box.

Several years ago at Christmas
I remember it so well
I spent a very lonely Christmas
Inside a lonely prison cell.

I'd been workin' in Toronto
In a Folk Song Coffee Shop.
It was hot and it was smokey
I just didn't know how hot!

I had a run-in with the Mounties,
R-C-M-P was their name.
They didn't look like Sargeant Preston
And they didn't act the same.

They had a stack of wants and warrants
Big enough to make a book
And they were mad about my smokin'
And some other stuff I took.

And so the Magistrate presided
And he set a monstrous bail.
I said "Judge, I stand here busted."
I got hustled off to jail.

The next four months were quite a party,
Lots of time to meditate (Ommm).
It's a different world in prison,
It's a different kind of wait.

It was early in November
I first heard them tell the tale
About the Sally Army's visit
Every Christmas time in jail.

A great annual occasion,
A great Yuletide salute.
Silent Night and seedy Santa,
A Box of candy and a piece of fruit.

Yes a box of Christmas candy
And a naval orange, to boot.
I heard the old cons talk about it,
Box of candy and a piece of fruit.

Til I could almost taste the candy,
I could almost smell the fruit.
Every day a little closer,
Box of candy and a piece of fruit.

Til I had a great misfortune
Worse than all my time in jail.
Twenty third day of December
That lousy judge lowered my bail!

He did it in the Christmas Spirit.
My friends and family raised the loot,
Never knowing I'd be losing
My Box of candy and piece of fruit.

So, Virginia, there's a Santa.
And if Santa ain't too mean
He owes me a box of candy
And a fuckin' tangerine!

I've pretty much decided on Turning Toward the Morning. I was going to go with "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," because it's actually relevant to the plot. But it didn't feel right in my stomach.

I now have a whole list of great titles pinned to my desk, too. You guys are awesome.

MORNING TRAIN TO SOMEWHERE
by Colleen Hodgson -Songs of Maggie

The shore line of Toronto is a frozen winter swell
The hard side of a tavern is a place she knows too well
All alone in the morning as the embers die, little robin girl, you're gonna fly

She laughed with them sailor boys who tore her gown
Snatching up the silver that they liked to toss around
She has a budding wing and a beady eye, little robin girl, you're gonna fly

Fly to the moon, fly to the stars,
Fly to where they understand what you are
You can kiss the sun, you can find the one,
The one that truly loves you       (x 2 )

And though you found her in the snow, pack your carpet bag and go
On the morning train........ to somewhere

As the branches glisten in the pale winter day
Train whistle blowing now, she's on her way
On a polar wind across an endless sky
Little robin girl, you're going to fly

You know you found her in the snow , pack your carpet bag and go
On the morning train........ to somewhere

Note: Though many links in the DigiTrad are currently broken, the mirror site (sniff.numachi.com) is functioning normally; lyrics, MIDIs, PDFs and the like can be found there. (But don't ask me why "sniff" or "numachi"; it's not my site.)

Hi,

Reading through this thread, I was going to say that, considering you had trouble finding a title, all those titles with cold words in them are probably too literal. But I see you already found that out for yourself.

Still, as I came up with a non-bitter-cold type of winter title, let me suggest it anyway: The Comfort of Singing Voices.

So, do you have book presentations where the titles are actually sung?

Bye,
