'Could you be a bit more specific, please?'

I just wondered if anyone could think of any song suggestions about an unsung hero or heroes, I'm not after anything specific just off the top of the head suggestions for a themed singers night next year.

Thank you. I'm sure you'll receive input soon. You might--while waiting--google the term

unsung hero in song

and also check Youtube where there seem to be more than a few, although it looks like many are of a rock n roll variety. Best of luck with the evening.

I suppose once you sing a song about him, he becomes a sung hero, n'est-ce pas?

The biography of Tom Crean, the polar explorer, is titled An Unsung Hero . He isn't any longer, of course, since there are now several songs about him!

Regards

Two Bits — a true story of equine heroism set in verse by Sharlot M. Hall (mid-1890s), revised and set to music by me. See my vanity thread for links to the original poem and story. I always choke up on the final lines.

Seems not to have posted first time I tried --- trying again --- apologies if it comes up twice: Bruce Watson has recently released a CD called Unsung Heroes of Australian History. More information at http://www.unsungheroesofaustralianhistory.com/.

"MacDonell on the Heights" by Stan Rogers tells the story of the militia captain who fought and died with Major-General Isaac Brock at Queenston in 1812.

Try it. You'll like it.

How about Donovan's 'the Universal Soldier"

Surely though the "Universal Soldier" is not a heroic figure in that song? The song at the end blames the ordinary soldier for war in allowing himself to be a pawn. As far as I see anyway. Might be more than a tad naieve but that's how it seems to read. A song which may more fit the bill of this thread is The Ballad Of John Mclean by Matt McGinn. Only a hero for the left right enough but the thread doesn't seem to discriminate.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, and yes Carole for pontardawe. It's about time I popped my singer's night cherry so to speak.

The girl who makes the thingummybob is a good one though I'm not sure if I could carry it off but very much the sentiment I was looking for.

The Ballad of Ira Hayes also good but too well known and associated with Cash for me to tackle.

MacDonell on the Heights is a possibility and shouldn't be too daunting to try, I wasn't at all familiar with the story though so I'll need to read up more on that.

Forgotten Hero by Andy Irvine is excellent, though as an english man could I get away with singing it even if I agree with the sentiment?

I was also looking at Al Grierson's candle for durruti which I know from David Rovic's version

Re opportunities for new songs I learnt about the Spanish's use of live carriers of the smallpox vaccine in the c19th and wondered if there could be a song there from the view of one of the carriers or minor characters more info. Might be a bit beyond my fledgling songwriting abilities though.

Asking for songs about unsung heroes is a bit like taking a collection for the wife and dependents of the Unknown Soldier .

To be fair to the original poster the purely literal meaning of the word 'unsung' is not the only definition for that word. It also means 'unknown' or 'little known' etc.

Christy Moore, I'm sure, would have several - one that comes to mind is "Whacker" Humphries".
"The Ballad Of Tim LeBlanc" - by Vin Garbutt.

Subject: Lyr Add: NEVER BE THE SUN (Donagh Long)
From: GUEST, MikeK
Date: 12 Dec 12 - 07:04 PM

I'm not too sure if this is on the right track, but it does describe the nature of many unsung heroes: Donagh Long's "Never Be the Sun":

Never Be the Sun

Words and Music by
Donagh Long, 1994

You'll never be the sun turning in the sky.
And you won't be the moon above us on the moonlit night.
And you won't be the stars in heaven although they burn so bright.
But even on the deepest ocean you will be the light.

You may not always shine as you go barefoot over stones.
You might be so long together or you might walk alone.
And you won't find that love comes easy,
But that love is always right.
So even when the dark clouds gather you will be the light.

And if you lose a part inside when love turns round on you,
Leaving the past behind, knowing you'll do like you always do,
Holding you blind,
Keeping you true.

You'll never be the sun turning in the sky.
And you won't be the moon above us on the moonlit night.
And you won't be the stars in heaven although they burn so bright
But even on the deepest ocean you will be the light
You will be the light,
You will be the light.

It's been recorded by a host of singers: Dolores Keane, John McDermott, Nanci Griffith, and the trio Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt, and Emmylou Harris, to name a few!
