Another quiz, with Christmas as the theme. As all I want is the song/carol title, & I'm giving quotes then clearly any answer can be easily Googled. (but that is rather infra dig)
As usual with my quizzes, Please do not post answers in this thread to allow others to see it without spoiling the fun.
I'm happy to see comments here & claims of scores:
Punctuation & line breaks have been removed just to make it a little harder!

A lot more may be familiar if the punctuation were there so that you could see the scansion!
#7 looks decidedly like a love song, but might not be :)

I claim 12, 10 I'm sure of and haven't bothered to check, 2 that google confirms + one that was the right tune but the wrong title (I didn't think my answer was a carol - more a hymn). But my guess for the Latin carol is wrong. I have a feeling that I'll know the first one when I look for the answers, no clue on 4,11,15,16,&18 .

A promising start, it looks like you're not having much problem with the traditional carols, more the newer Christmas songs.
The Latin one (#19) I've quoted a full verse. The chorus is better known though.

I haven't looked at the answers yet but I think I have about 75%; I have four of them (#4, 11, 16, 18) marked UNKNOWN, and #15 also marked UNKNOWN but with a qualifier. My answers to #2 and #19 are guesses, but I think there's a fair chance they're correct. Now I'll go look at the answer thread.

Okay, I did get 75% (15 out of 20) going off the top of my head. I was wrong on #19, but I was right in my qualified "UNKNOWN" on #15. The problem there is that the wording is not what I'm used to (I have always seen/sung "opening to" where the quiz has "clearly as") plus I don't think of that hymn as a Christmas piece, let alone a carol.

I'm pretty sure I have all but 11, 12 and 19--though I should have 19 since I know I sang it this season--my guess was that 19 was a Latin version of an earlier one. So maybe I was right.

I did sing all the others this season, I'm virtually certain.   Never sang #4 before this year. We sang it as part of a children's Christmas concert at the Kennedy Center,, during a play written for the occasion-- (the writer is from Devizes, by the way),-- and the play centered on a very famous letter written by a little girl and answered by a newspaper editor:   "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".   Play had to do with Virginia, as a grandmother, convincing her skeptical and easlly bored grandson (narrator of the play) that Christmas was worth celebrating.

As part of the concert, each section had to stand up just before coming in with the appropriate words.    As one of the basses, I had to stand up first and sing the title of the song.    It was great fun.


Regardless of how I did, thanks so much, Nigel. for this. I love this sort of quiz--and had a better chance at this than at some of them.

I think I know 15, though in the US this is not thought of as a Christmas song. Is it in the UK?

Missed 1, 11, 12 and 19.    Certainly should have gotten 19--did sing that one this year.

12 is really rough--sang that one this year too, but not that verse.


Does #1 have another title?

I know I got 14 out of the 20 right (without having to look).
There are 2 or 3 of the songs that I'm not sure I even know.

The ones I can't guess are : 1, 2, 4, 11, 18, and 19.    No. 19 may be a familiar song but a verse I'm not familiar with.

OK, turns out there's a reason I missed the 6 that I did. I don't know any of those songs. I'm vaguely familiar with #19 but have never sung it in choir or in a singaround or in any other context.

On the issue of #15's precise wording, Google shows 363 results for "Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee clearly as the sun above" vs. 191,000 hits for "Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee opening to the sun above". And I second Ron Davies' question about its "Christmas" connection. Of course in a supremely broad sense virtually any Christian hymn could be called a Christmas carol, but usually the label is only applied to those songs topically connected with Christmas (including Advent and Epiphany) and/or with Winter.

Well! I think I did better at the King William quiz than at either of the follow-ons.
21 - 40 I got 23,28,30,31,35 and possibly 33& 40.
41 - 60 only 45,47(prob),56,57, though 43 & 44 are tip-of-the tongue familiar.

31 has been thoroughly Kippered for me.

Notes for non-UK catters
King William quiz is published in 'the Guardian' abefore Christmas every year and is fairly impossible. It used to be set as a test paper at King William College before Christmas, then again after research over Christmas. A cross between general knowledge and cryptic crossword since finding the theme in each section is helpful.

The Kipper family (maybe the name is a tribute to the Coppers) have 'ruined' many traditional songs by overlaying them with parody.

Hey Genie, that's not very nice---Santa will remember.    Loading the dice against us by using the same obscure verse from the same song twice. Least you could have done was to use the original French, so we'd be possibly steered in the right direction.

I also missed 23, 29 , 34 and 36.    Don't feel that bad about missing 29, 34, and 36.
