Subject: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 07:35 AM Another quiz, with Christmas as the theme. As all I want is the song/carol title, & I'm giving quotes then clearly any answer can be easily Googled. (but that is rather infra dig) As usual with my quizzes, Please do not post answers in this thread to allow others to see it without spoiling the fun. I'm happy to see comments here & claims of scores: Punctuation & line breaks have been removed just to make it a little harder! Merry Christmas all 1 O and A and A and O Cum cantibus in choro 2 He is Alpha and Omega He the source the ending He 3 The weather outside is frightful But the fire is so delightful 4 Where it's snowing all winter through that's where I want to be snowball throwing that's what I'll do how I'm longing to ski 5 Snow had fallen snow on snow snow on snow 6 See the blazing Yule before us Fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la 7 Stay close by me for ever and love me 8 Bring me flesh and bring me wine 9 There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found 10 And makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness 11 We're gonna have a party tonight I'm gonna find that girl underneath the mistletoe we'll kiss by candlelight 12 When it snows ain't it thrilling though your nose gets a chilling we'll frolic and play the Eskimo way 13 Joyful all ye nations rise join the triumph of the skies 14 Radiance beams from thy holy face 15 Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee clearly as the sun above 16 Think of all the fun I've missed think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed 17 Sing Choirs of angels sing in exultation 18 They got cars big as bars they got rivers of gold but the wind goes right through you it´s no place for the old 19 Tempus adest gratiæ Hoc quod optabamus Carmina lætitiæ Devote reddamus 20 The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 08:30 AM The best score at the club last night was 15/20, by a team of 3. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 09:23 AM John MacKenzie first up with a valiant 18/20 |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Uncle Phil Date: 24 Dec 12 - 09:27 AM 11/20 without Google. Disappointed that I couldn't top the club team after working for hours on song selection for two Christmas shows this year. Merry Christmas. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Dec 12 - 10:08 AM Only 7 of those even sounded familiar. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 10:56 AM A lot more may be familiar if the punctuation were there so that you could see the scansion! #7 looks decidedly like a love song, but might not be :) |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Dec 12 - 11:14 AM Think I've got 12. Definitely much better on carols than the other Christmas songs! |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Dec 12 - 02:11 PM Without a Search engine I have a fairly certain Fifty Per Cent |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Mo the caller Date: 24 Dec 12 - 07:50 PM I claim 12, 10 I'm sure of and haven't bothered to check, 2 that google confirms + one that was the right tune but the wrong title (I didn't think my answer was a carol - more a hymn). But my guess for the Latin carol is wrong. I have a feeling that I'll know the first one when I look for the answers, no clue on 4,11,15,16,&18 . |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 09:17 PM Mo: A promising start, it looks like you're not having much problem with the traditional carols, more the newer Christmas songs. The Latin one (#19) I've quoted a full verse. The chorus is better known though. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Dec 12 - 09:30 PM Just in case anyone can use all or part of this quiz (in the pub Chrismas lunchtime or something) the answers are already in SQ2 quiz answer thread Cheers |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 25 Dec 12 - 12:29 AM I haven't looked at the answers yet but I think I have about 75%; I have four of them (#4, 11, 16, 18) marked UNKNOWN, and #15 also marked UNKNOWN but with a qualifier. My answers to #2 and #19 are guesses, but I think there's a fair chance they're correct. Now I'll go look at the answer thread. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 25 Dec 12 - 12:36 AM Okay, I did get 75% (15 out of 20) going off the top of my head. I was wrong on #19, but I was right in my qualified "UNKNOWN" on #15. The problem there is that the wording is not what I'm used to (I have always seen/sung "opening to" where the quiz has "clearly as") plus I don't think of that hymn as a Christmas piece, let alone a carol. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Dec 12 - 07:14 PM OK, checked my answers now: one wrong, the other 11 right, including 19! Didn't get 2 (should have as I sang it in a concert on the 23rd!!) - or 4,9,10,11, 15, 16 and 18. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Ron Davies Date: 25 Dec 12 - 07:46 PM I'm pretty sure I have all but 11, 12 and 19--though I should have 19 since I know I sang it this season--my guess was that 19 was a Latin version of an earlier one. So maybe I was right. I did sing all the others this season, I'm virtually certain. Never sang #4 before this year. We sang it as part of a children's Christmas concert at the Kennedy Center,, during a play written for the occasion-- (the writer is from Devizes, by the way),-- and the play centered on a very famous letter written by a little girl and answered by a newspaper editor: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". Play had to do with Virginia, as a grandmother, convincing her skeptical and easlly bored grandson (narrator of the play) that Christmas was worth celebrating. As part of the concert, each section had to stand up just before coming in with the appropriate words. As one of the basses, I had to stand up first and sing the title of the song. It was great fun. Regardless of how I did, thanks so much, Nigel. for this. I love this sort of quiz--and had a better chance at this than at some of them. I think I know 15, though in the US this is not thought of as a Christmas song. Is it in the UK? |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Ron Davies Date: 25 Dec 12 - 07:53 PM Missed 1, 11, 12 and 19. Certainly should have gotten 19--did sing that one this year. 12 is really rough--sang that one this year too, but not that verse. Does #1 have another title? |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Genie Date: 25 Dec 12 - 11:26 PM I know I got 14 out of the 20 right (without having to look). There are 2 or 3 of the songs that I'm not sure I even know. The ones I can't guess are : 1, 2, 4, 11, 18, and 19. No. 19 may be a familiar song but a verse I'm not familiar with. Genie |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Genie Date: 25 Dec 12 - 11:51 PM OK, turns out there's a reason I missed the 6 that I did. I don't know any of those songs. I'm vaguely familiar with #19 but have never sung it in choir or in a singaround or in any other context. Now here are a few more for you jolly folks to guess: 21. From Atlantic to Pacific, gee the traffic is terrific 22. the grass is green, the orange and palm trees sway 23. and Father John, before he's gone, will bless the house 24. Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the cross be borne 25. Mine will be the shortest one, you'll be sure to know 26. His law is light and his Gospel is peace 27. While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat 28. Incense holds a deity nigh 29. He doesn't have to use our dirty chimney flue, just bring him in the front door 30. They didn't see me creep down the stairs to have a peek 31. Now, to the Lord sing praises, all ye within this place 32. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, let all within us praise 33. The kids in girl and boy land will have a jubilee 34. He wore my coat on Christmas morn 35. And still their heavenly music sounds o'er all the weary world 36. He's got a sleigh full, it's not gonna stay full 37. Wie oft hat mich zur Weihnachtzeit ein baum von dir mich hoch erfreut! 38. It'll nearly be like a picture card by Currier and Ives 39. Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree won't be the same, dear 40. Through the years we all will be together if the fates allow |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 26 Dec 12 - 12:05 AM Genie, in #26 shouldn't "light" read "love"? |
Subject: Yet Another Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 26 Dec 12 - 01:47 AM Here is yet another such quiz, in this case basically eschewing the secular: 41 All the trees like mages come Bending low with 'Gloria!' 42 In the blue ranges lorikeets calling 43 Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear 44 But Thy couch was the sod, O Thou Son of God 45 And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place 46 Every hearth is aflame, and the beautiful sing 47 Or all of God's angels in heaven for to sing 48 Lo! for his guard, the bright angels attend 49 All glory be in Paradise, this heavenly host did sing 50 We beheld it (it is no fable), God incarnate, King of bliss, 51 Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear 52 Shall I stand and weep? Be it far Jehovah! 53 The Thorn it blooms with golden flowers, And Kissing's fashion now. 54 O siano, siano, siano jak lilija 55 A barn shall harbor heaven, A stall become a shrine. 56 Over that bed the moon shines bright 57 Deeply were we stained Per nostra crimina: 58 The tender Babe was found, A ragged robe of rabbit skin 59 Christ comes as a baby weak and poor 60 In Bethlehem blest this baby of bliss will be Born here before you |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 26 Dec 12 - 02:18 AM Oops, sorry, 51 should read 51 You'll forget your flocks, you'll forget your herds The answers are now in this thread. Enjoy, and please don't give away the answers here (use the answers thread). Haruo |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: KT Date: 26 Dec 12 - 03:16 AM No problem with 13 out of the first 20, Nigel. 1, 4, 11, 15, 16, 18 & 19 have me stumped. Off to research.... Btw, #2 is one of my favorites... |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Haruo Date: 26 Dec 12 - 03:30 AM On the issue of #15's precise wording, Google shows 363 results for "Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee clearly as the sun above" vs. 191,000 hits for "Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee opening to the sun above". And I second Ron Davies' question about its "Christmas" connection. Of course in a supremely broad sense virtually any Christian hymn could be called a Christmas carol, but usually the label is only applied to those songs topically connected with Christmas (including Advent and Epiphany) and/or with Winter. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: KT Date: 26 Dec 12 - 03:36 AM Genie, 7 of yours escape me. Will have to research those, too. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Dec 12 - 06:05 AM Haruo: For some reason (locality maybe?) I only hear #15 at Christmas. Variations in lyrics may be laid at the door of Lady Mondegreen! Merry Christmas all. Feel free to add the full answers to the two follow on quizzes to my normal answer thread to keep them all together: Here |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: banjoman Date: 26 Dec 12 - 06:24 AM Took a bit of doing but between us we managed a perfect score. Mind you we did sing/play most of the carols mentioned during Christmas |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Dec 12 - 06:30 AM Well! I think I did better at the King William quiz than at either of the follow-ons. 21 - 40 I got 23,28,30,31,35 and possibly 33& 40. 41 - 60 only 45,47(prob),56,57, though 43 & 44 are tip-of-the tongue familiar. 31 has been thoroughly Kippered for me. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Dec 12 - 06:37 AM Notes for non-UK catters King William quiz is published in 'the Guardian' abefore Christmas every year and is fairly impossible. It used to be set as a test paper at King William College before Christmas, then again after research over Christmas. A cross between general knowledge and cryptic crossword since finding the theme in each section is helpful. The Kipper family (maybe the name is a tribute to the Coppers) have 'ruined' many traditional songs by overlaying them with parody. "Dido, Fido..... & Spot. These are the dogs I have got" "How do you like my curtains that I got in the sale last week" |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Dec 12 - 06:40 AM One more question, I'll number it 101 in case someone wants to put up 61-80 101 In which carol did Mrs Mondegreen (my Mum actually) hear the line Custard on the brow |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Ron Davies Date: 27 Dec 12 - 05:59 AM Hey Genie, that's not very nice---Santa will remember. Loading the dice against us by using the same obscure verse from the same song twice. Least you could have done was to use the original French, so we'd be possibly steered in the right direction. I also missed 23, 29 , 34 and 36. Don't feel that bad about missing 29, 34, and 36. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Mo the caller Date: 27 Dec 12 - 07:43 AM Haruo, I like the way you set out your answers - very clear. I KNEW I ought to know 43 & 44. |
Subject: RE: Christmas Lyrics Quiz From: Ron Davies Date: 27 Dec 12 - 10:07 AM Yes, Genie, I'm kidding (partly). |
