Subject: USA - National Barn Dance (1940s) From: ChrisJBrady Date: 05 Jan 13 - 01:15 PM Likely the earliest 'folk' music and song programmes available on the web. Seem to have been recorded from air or disk. Of the hundreds of programmes a few have survived for listening to and downlading from Archive.org They exude enthusiasm and musicianship in the war-time era of WW2. Recorded at the "Hay Loft" in Winsconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. http://www.wlshistory.com/NBD/ http://www.wlshistory.com/NBD/ http://www.otrcat.com/national-barn-dance-p-1661.html |

Subject: RE: USA - National Barn Dance (1940s) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jan 13 - 05:05 PM Anybody know the location of the WLS "Hay Loft" in Wisconsin? I moved to Racine, Wisconsin, from Detroit in 1958. I listened to top-40 music on WLS a lot - those were the days of Dick Biondi, also of "Chicken Man." Country music was gone from WLS by then. -Joe, from Racine- |

Subject: RE: USA - National Barn Dance (1940s) From: Arkie Date: 08 Jan 13 - 06:13 PM Joe, two locations I have seen mentioned in various articles on the WLS Barndance were the Eighth Street Theater and the Sherman Hotel. There may have been others. Although the barn dance is usually considered a "country" show and it did appeal to "country" people, it included the Hoosier Hot Shots, George Goebel, Eddie Peabody, and the Williams Brothers which featured future pop star, Andy Williams. It also gave a boost to Gene Autry, Eddie Dean, Lulu Belle and Scotty, and Patsy Montana. Lonnie Glosson also did some time with the WLS barn dance and once told me that when Gene Autry was invited to Hollywood to star in western pictures, he asked Lonnie to go along as his sidekick. Lonnie did not seem to have any regrets. He kept at what he was used to doing on into his nineties. Producers recognized that their audience had a wider interest than 'hillbilly' music and the shows were not that similar to what eventually appeared in Nashville as the Grand Ole Opry. |
