Nice? Understatement (Big Grin)! I had a wonderful time, even with the downpour throughout Friday evening's concert under the roof of the boat shed. Thank goodness for the dropdown canvas sides of the shed. I enjoyed the music, appreciated the variety of presentations at the symposium, and loved the pub sings. I also was thrilled to meet some Mudcatters but wish I could have met all or you who were at the festival. Maybe next time you go   . . . .

Next year's festival will be the 35th on June 12-15, 2014, assuming that it runs for four days. (One year it had to be cut back to three days.) I am basing those dates on the announcement that the symposium will be June 13-14, and proposals for papers (History, Folklore, Literature, Ethnomusicology or other appropriate disciplines that address any appropriate aspect of music or verse of the sea or inland waters from the Age of Sail through the present day. Graduate students are encouraged to submit proposals.for symposium papers and a brief curriculum vitae or resume to Dr Glenn S. Gordinier via e-mail at glenn-gordinier@mysticseaport.org by February 7, 2014.) are already being sought. Please note that June 15, the Sunday of the festival, will also be Father's Day. Taking your dad to the festival will be a great gift!

Also, Geoff Kaufman said there might be a ChanteyBlast in September. I hope it won't conflict with the Portsmouth Maritime Festival or the New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival! It's bad enough that January's Chantey Blasts have conflicted with the 24-hour Moby Dick readings at the New Bedford Whaling Museum!

survived another expedition from western NY to mecca... I mean Mystic.   LOL

Had a great time & met new & old friends... even managed a few hours of shuteye...

Marc, remind Geoff that all the symposium recordings have been transferred over to the computer with the Fishtown Chapel recordings.

Hope to make it to Old Songs & keep the party going.

Wow...what a great weekend. So glad to meet the 'catters I did (esp Chantey Lass who flagged me down). Great music, new friends and we (Mudhook) had a terrific time.

Hope to get back there...but in the meantime hope to see some of you at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in September.

There were a lot of highlights for me. There were the old friends I only get to see about once a year. There were the new people I get to hear sing and share stories and songs with after during the wee hours of the morning. There were the Museum grounds and ships; I could just live there forever if they'd let me.

I only lasted this year at the YTB late night sings until about 2:30 AM. I just don't have the stamina anymore to make it until the sun rises.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make it so much fun.

And the new CDs I bought and swapped carried me all the way back to Maine.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

How is it possible that each festival gets better than the last? This was the 25th for the HTs and we never had a better time. Laughing, crying, hugging and kissing...old friends and new...the young and the old...old favorite songs and even some new ones...bawdy songs and hymns and both in the church,,,John Roberts performing with everyone...Geof Kauffman sitting with us and signing Grey Funnel Line (SIGH)...dancing the Unicorn Song wit Don Sineti...many beers and boullibase (sp) in Latitude 41...friends like Charlie, Peter,Celeste, Penny,Judy,Joy, Bonnie,Don, Paula, Cliff and the list goes on and on...goodbye dear friends until we all meet again to sing our beloved music...Much love

glad to hear you got home OK, Mary.

We did our best to keep you hale & hearty... LOL.... but it most definitely is an endurance test. Just the hike around the 17 acre grounds is enough to wear you down :)

Now we need to get Heather Sparling to do a symposium paper on her work with maritime disaster songs... we only have 11 months to go.

We had a great time meeting Paul Mercer from the NY State Library & spent a lot of time in the YTB exchanging songs... including Mike's rendition of the Wreaker's Prayer - the Newfoundland poem he wrote a tune for & added a chorus/refrain... it's a blast.

We must have getten at least 6-7 inches of rain at home in western NY and it's pouring still... sigh. I should have planted rice paddies...

I might have lost a camera there..I think Canon in a black little case..had it on Sunday morning and knew it was lost when I checked into motel..reported to security Monday morning...it was in the Lewis House when last remembered..I think I had it with me Sunday afternoon because i wanted to get batteries so I could actually take pictures...then no camera..possible it got into a mystery pocket in the knapsack I mailed back home..here's hoping.

Mg, speaking of cameras, Charlie (Charley Noble) Ipcar has put links to his photos on Facebook. Even if you are not his FB Friend, you will probably be able to see them by going to his page or by going to the Mudcat FB page. Hopefully at some point Mystic Seaport will post some photos on FB, too.

Meeting Paul Mercer at the late night YTB sings was nice. I find him a very interesting person, researcher and songwriter.

And he's also a world renown expert on "Termite Farts."

Glad to hear that you got back safe, mg.

Charley Noble

Wanted to report that my bag arrived today and sure enough, there was the camera inside my little knapsack in big knapsack. Thank heavens. I think I have some nice family pictures on it. Took zero pictures at Mystic although opportunities surrounded me. It was all quite awesome. Thanks Charlie for hauling me around to security to report it..I called them and told them it was found.

One of my favorite memories is hearing Danny Spooner singing Caller Herrin..I really didn't know the song..was aware of it..but he just nails it..here is a link from another time he sang it..http://ecti.english.illinois.edu/Media/Ballads/CallerHerrin.mp3

Sorry I don't have that song on cannery cd, which also includes fisher lassies etc..oh..last night I googled caller herrin history and there is a 1947 Scottish Film Board film by the name..also at last one short film of the herring or fish lassies....Well..perhaps I can use it on a future run of cd...reminds me, I should tell people it is out..well, it is out for $10 plus shipping...$2.25 in US and more in Canada and who knows how much elsewhere. But if you bought a bunch shipping gets very cheap in US with media mail.

Mary, I'm glad your camera found its way home to you.

Remember, if you come back to Mystic, New Bedford, or anywhere in RI, look at flights to Providence. Let me know before you book your flights and I'll tell you if I'll be available provide transportation when you land or depart. This goes for anyone else flying toward those destinations. I won't do Hartford, New London, or Boston, but Providence is really Warwick and I live in a neighboring town.

sounds great. i found the hartford airport disappointing..not so much as a vending machine and a consensus among people i talked with there and elsewhere that hartford was the most corrupt town in america...or at least usa portion of it. mayor is not beloved.   but people were nice.

Hmm. Here's what's currently available at Green State Airport (Providence/Warwick, RI). I don't know what the hours are for each these places, though, but if I transported you I'd make sure you had access to some kind of food.
