Does anyone have the words (and tune) to: "Sunday dawn, Cock-a-doodle-do, he was gone, Cock-a-doodle-do, and I thought my heart would break."

Thanks! Howie

Here's what I was able to glean from The Day The Thunder Died, by Urban Prescott, page 245:

Three nights I laid awake, cock a doodle do,
Waiting for my rooster to say, cock a doodle do,
Sunday morn, cock a doodle do,
He was gone, cock a doodle do,
And I thought my heart would break.
I think that's all of the song that there is in the Prescott book.

I agree, Joe. I also think it's the author's creation because there is no end note or footnote superscript number as one might expect were it attributable to someone else. That said, the kids remark they'd heard it from their mother.

I'm struck by the snippet because of the allusions to Peter(?) and the 'thrice deny me' and possibly also Christ's death--but the ending of the paragraph when the daughter says the rooster "went into the pot" may shoot that idea in the foot. Without reading the entire book it's difficult to contextualize with any hope of accuracy. The author is a man of the cloth (he uses the term Rev in his email address), but he's also a writer and they tend to use what they can to create a story.

Then again, maybe I'm reading too much into it. Sometimes a story is just a story.

Hi, 999-

The requestor, Howie, contacted me by e-mail. He said his wife learned it as a kid and she's now 52. I'm betting it's in one of our school songbooks....if we only knew the title of the song.

My wife thinks the title is the "Lost Rooster Song" or "Lost Rooster"

Found several "lost rooster" and cock-a-doodle-doo songs, some traditional, but not the verse quoted here.

Haven't tried the school songbooks.

This is what my wife thinks are the lyrics. She could be wrong tho! Roughly 45 years since she learned it!

He has feathers blue and bright, Cock-a-doodle-do,
When he sings Cock-a-doodle-do,
Flaps his wings, Cock-a-doodle-do,
He is such a pretty sight.

France and Spain I travelled through, Cock-a-doodle-do,
And to Germany I flew, Cock-a-doodle-do,
No bird there, Cock-a-doodle-do,
Not in England or Peru.

So kind friends both far and near, Cock-a-doodle-do,
To my pleading heart give ear, Cock-a-doodle-do,
Find my pet Cock-a-doodle-do,
Don't forget Cock-a-doodle-do,
Bring me back my rooster dear.

What about that "three nights" verse, Howie? Is that part of what your wife remembers? Where does it fit in?

Three nights I laid awake, cock a doodle do,
Waiting for my rooster to say, cock a doodle do,
Sunday morn, cock a doodle do,
He was gone, cock a doodle do,
And I thought my heart would break.

Not a creation, I have all the lyrics. I'll try to get my aunt to sing it, and post it, but I'm bad with technology.

OMGoodness! I have searched for these lyrics for years. My Mom was an elementary schoolteacher in northwestern Pennsylvania from the early 60s through the late 80s. She used to learn songs from the school songbook to teach her class and she would teach them to me as well. I would dearly love to have the complete lyrics if you have them.

Three whole nights I’ve lain awake cockadoodledoo
For my little roosters sake cockadoodledoo
Sunday morn cockadoodledoo
He was gone cockadoodledoo
And I thought my heart would break

He has feathers blue and bright cockadoodledoo
And he crows with all his might cockadoodledoo
When he sings cockadoodledoo
Flaps his wings cockadoodledoo
He is such a pretty sight

France and Spain I’ve hunted through cockadoodledoo
Then to Germany I flew cockadoodledoo
No bird there cockadoodledoo
Anywhere cockadoodledoo
Not in England or Peru

So find friends both far and near cockadoodledoo
To my pleading now give ear cockadoodledoo
Find my pet cockadoodledoo
Don’t forget cockadoodledoo
Bring me back my rooster dear

this song..Come little (or pretty fisher
maiden, some of the lyrics go like this
sea weeds that grow close to my boat makes
a bedding for me(I think) I could dream
of leaving my home by the shining sea.
