Subject: RE: folkies and prog rockers From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 01 Mar 13 - 04:03 AM Prog traditionally involved folk elements, but always managed to keep a healthy distance from folk's intimidating fundamentalism. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Third Ear Band, Henry Cow, The Art Bears, King Crimson - the list is endless - each managed to touch the modal soul of British pastoralism in a way that folk (& folk rock) consistently failed to do. These days only The Unthanks are returning the compliment in the mainstream, whilst the various Weirdlore bands certainly seem to be more Prog than Morris On in their approach to The Tradition, which can only be a good thing. Long gone are those dazzling days of yore when the mighty Gentle Giant wove their wondrous charms in the uncharted realms of Folk Medievalism - but who'd have thought their muse would live on in the glorious neo-prog pop of Everything Everything who represent the very antithesis of the sort of folk Mumford & Sons are known for. Folk gradually dissolves into the future mists of the unknown, but its fragmented DNA lives on eternally in ways that will be every bit as vibrant as what went before. This is the Prog Faith.
