Not Me Im in England, but I wonder if you can help me. Do you know if a lady called Moira Lehey still performs there? I know festivals are big places and Australia is huge but we used to know her years ago and we know she used to go to the festival.

I'll be there! wouldn't miss it for quids.

The usual suspects will be at the Hymn session on Sunday morning (best singing session in the whole festival!) for the usual group photo.

Another place to be seen will be the Bush Music Club's Family Bush Dance where at least 2 OzCatters will be present - Bob Bolton in the band, & Sandra in Sydney swanning around wearing a Manager badge! Well, that's what I called myself when I put in the application.

========================
Bush Music Club Inc, Australia's oldest surviving folk club, founded 1954 & still going strong

Family Bush Dance at the Piazza 4.30 to 6pm on Saturday.

A bush dance for the young and young at heart, with the emphasis on having FUN! Bring the kids & grandkids!
The band covers all ages of the BMC family, ranging from 5-year old Emily on uke & percussion, to Frank who joined BMC in 1955, on bush bass & bones. No experience is necessary, all dances called.
========================

where else can we meet? The late evening Singing Sessions will be good.

Any overseas Mudcatters visiting Oz for The National?

I'll be there somewhere. I don't do the hymnlike thing at all; maybe
some Ned Kelly songs at the Stock Camp instead.

FREE lunchtime concert from 12.30-1.30, in the NLA Auditorium featuring world renowned singer, Frank Ifield.

There are not many artists who can claim to have had the Beatles as their support act or be the first to have three consecutive hits on the British charts.

Frank Ifield can. However this world renowned performer had his roots in the NSW area of Dural where he learnt to play ukulele, was encouraged by his teacher to put Australian Poetry to his own tunes (age 11) and listened to the yodelling of Tex Morton – a true 'folk' background.

Join NLA Folklore collector, Rob Willis and musicians Chloe and Jason Roweth in conversation with Frank Ifield.

You will also get the chance to catch Frank Ifield at the National Folk Festival in a completely different presentation "I Remember You"

Hope to see you there
Rob

================================

ps. the hymn session is a singing session, nuffin' religious in it. Imagine a group of shanty singers (most of them atheists, recovered catholics, or something similar) roaring out Onwards Christian Soldiers - that's when you know why those anonymous folk who wrote the folk songs used hymn tunes! And why John Warner uses them, too.

Jason

Frank Ifield MC'd a Festival at Fagan Park Hornsby many years ago when we were performing and he told me that, as a boy, he attended Carlingford Public School , which I think in the 1940s was a Rural School ...anyway you might mention this to him .

Also, his brother was our piano player's (Wilma), gardener at Normanhurst

I think that Frank at one stage worked as a fireman in North Sydney

Best wishes

Allen

folkies always gather in the stairwell, it has the best acoustics in the whole showground! It kills my back & legs, but I love it.

JennieG reports the Hymn session is longer this year, 9.40-11 - daily programs here & we have a 30 min gap afterwards before the next act starts so we might get a few more songs in!

Late night singing sessions in the Song Room
Friday - hosts The Roaring Forties
Sat - Margaret Walters, Judy Pinder, Jerry O'Reilly, Alan Whitbread & Seamus Gill
Sunday - Judy Pinder & Lonnie Martin
Monday - not programmed but it always happens.

G'day BruceD,

As "Sandra in Sydney" notes, I will be there ... National Folklore Conference, at the National Library, on Thursday ... then back to EPIC (Entertainment Park In Canberra) for the NFF, over the rest of Easter.

I'll be at most of the events / gatherings / arising from Bush Music Club impending 60th anniversary ... or anything that arises tagged to MudCat!

Regards,

Bob

Never miss an opportunity for shameless self-promotion, I say.

I have an extra reason to be at the National this year. Senor Cabrales is launching our first CD, "Aqui". It's an Asturian, Galician, Breton, Irish and Scottish instrumental soup of grand proportions! Come and say G'day (or 'Hola').

Lots of other good stuff happening as well. It's shaping up to be a great Festival.

Oh, yes - I almost forgot. When I was growing up at Thornleigh I was told Frank Ifield had been a milko at Beecroft, just down the track, although I don't remember ever having this verified. Perhaps early morning milk deliveries were accompanied by a yodel, and people drew the wrong conclusion?

I'll be there in Adelaide Morris kit by day or sporting ancient folk and morris themed gear by night and looking for singing sessions. There are about 100 booked morris people and I know of a few dozen more so there is no escape. I gather we have some UK Morris there coming early for the Morris Ring meeting the following weekend in Adelaide and over 50 UK Morris bods at the Ring do.
As the Squire of the Australian Morris Ring, I have to be there!

Gidday all,

Irish Mudcatter Libertyboy aka Jerry O'Reilly will be there. Jerry is a fine traditional singer and also a teacher of set dancing, he will be acting in both roles at the fest. Don't fail to go hear him sing. He is a collector of traditional songs and a composer of songs in the traditional style. He has an extensive repetoir and a deep understanding and knowledge of the history of Irish traditional song. He is a longtime member of the organising committee of the world famous Góilín Singers Club and a founding member of the Frank Harte Festival. Not to be missed

Quite a lot of people in the top campground already but not all are here for the festival, although there are some early arrivals like us. I'm working a double shift on Sunday and will be around during next week too.

Hi folks,

Canberra Chris will be there with the beloved Shiny Bum Singers, frantically rewriting material for the Political Cabaret with Shortis & Simpson on Easter Sunday at 7.10, in light of yesterday's all flash and no bang sensational non-events on Parliament Hill. On to their show at the Spiegeltent tonight in Canberra - John Shortis has had 24 hours to rewrite tonight's show!

We are on somewhere every day at the National, check the program. Should mention that our first one, Friday at 1140 in the Flute N Fiddle venue is a tribute concert to the late David Meyers, much loved Shiny Bum, Poets Breakfast host etc. It didn't get listed in the program as such, so we are putting up leaflets, but hope to spread word.

Our Saturday show is another musical, 'Rampant Bureaucracy', telling a horribly familiar story about shonky govt programs. No resemblance to real life intended, except the last several years in Australia.

Look forward to catching up!

I'll try to get to your Friday workshop, Liberty Boy. Do you have a Mudcatter badge?
