Subject: Grave On The Green Hillside - lyrics?
From: Ben
Date: 04 Nov 99 - 04:28 PM

Hi,

Could someone please help me with a couple of lines?

I need the ones that follow:

: "There's an angel, too, for each little grave, an angel _________"

and:

"And they speak to the soul of a better day, of a day that's near at hand Though we _________"

If anyone could fill these in for me, I'd be much obliged.

Thanks.

Ben

GRAVE ON THE GREEN HILLSIDE
(A. P. Carter, 1929)

There's a little grave on the green hillside that lies to the morning sun,
And the way-worn feet often wander there when the cares of the day are done.
We sometimes sit in the twilight fall and talk of a far-off land,
And I sometimes feel in the twilight there the touch of a vanished hand.

CHORUS: Grave on the green hillside,
Grave on the green hillside,
In the years to come we will calmly sleep
In a grave on the green hillside.

And this land is full of these little graves in the valleys, plains, and hills.
There's an angel, too, for each little grave, an angel sufficient, Bill.
I know not how, but I sometimes think that they lead us with gentle hands,
And a whisper falls on a willing ear from the shore of a far-off land. CHORUS

And these little graves are but wayside marks that point to a far-off land,
And they speak to the soul of a better day, of a day that's near at hand.
Though we first must walk through this darksome veil, (vale) yet Christ will be our guide.
We will reach the shore of a far-off land through a grave on a green hillside. CHORUS

Technically, "veil" in the last stanza should be "vale."

It's not what the Carters are singing, but the words are:

"And these angels some mission fill"

according to this transcription:

Boy, that "angel" line is a hard one to make out. I can't agree with the "Bill" interpretation. I saw one that had it "an angel so mission-filled," which sounds pretty close to what I hear. Richard Matteson has it "An angel procession fills" - don't know if I buy that one, either.
The best interpretation of the Carter recording I can muster is, "garble, angel, garble, garble, garble." But if you really want to know what I think it is, I'll vote for "an angel so vision-filled."

"an angel sufficient, Bill"

That's a funny mondegreen. Why bring poor old Bill into it? lol

I've always sung it:
"an angel, its mission filled" (as in 'FULfilled'.)

Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice sing "and these little angels some mission fill." I have always thought that the next lines describe the mission: "they lead us with gentle hands" ... and a[n angel's] whisper falls on a willing ear"

I think the song's writer intended to say that their mission is that of   guardian angels. That's my favorite part of the song.
