Subject: RE: Galway Shawl Parody From: GUEST,John Foxen Date: 17 Apr 13 - 06:59 AM Thanks for that Mr Fingers - or may I call you Lead? Which brings me to my next question: is Liz the Squeak the name I should use or her proper name (whatever that is). I am one of the boring old fashioned types who likes to attribute a song properly rather can up with lines like: "This is an old Irish traditional song called Fiddlers Green." |

Subject: Lyr Add: GALWAY DRAWL From: Leadfingers Date: 16 Apr 13 - 05:03 AM Liz the Sqeak posted this in May '05 At the local folk club, in fairest London, One pleasant evening in the month of May, There stood a singer, of Cockney breeding And his singing fairly took my breath away: Ch: He had no talent, or sense of rhythm No ear for music, no none at all…. But he sang for ages, went on for pages, And he sang them slowly, in a Galway drawl. He sang of Ireland, as if he'd been there, He sang of troubles and war and pain. He stopped eventually, we clapped politely, So he stood and sang them all again: He sang of rebels and Irish rovers, The lakes, Coolphin and Ponchitrain He sang each note, like an Irish setter And the tears stood in our eyes with pain. He kept on singing, we started walking, Till the Temple Station came into view, Says he to us, 'mates, all back to my place, Where I've got another book of songs or two: |

Subject: Galway Shawl Parody From: Richard Bridge Date: 15 Apr 13 - 01:32 PM I have searched but to no avail for the complete words to a parody of "The Galway Shawl" I heard some time ago. The thrust of it is about one of those "afterclub" folking things we used to do when young - called "going back for coffee" or something. Anyway, a geezer from the folk club goes back and insists on singing "The Galway Shawl" at great length and totally horribly. I can remember the odd word here and there - "He sang each note like an Irish setter" "He went on for hours" "And he sang it all in a Galway drawl" "He had no something, no sense of rhythm, no sense of timing, no none at all" Can anyone help me identify it? And preferably provide all the words? |
