Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19/4/2013 From: GUEST,Auldtimer Date: 22 Apr 13 - 12:04 PM It must be nearly 14 years since I last saw her. She was a kind soul, always made time for me and put me up a couple of times when attending TMSA functions in Perth. Another of the "good guys" gone. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19/4/2013 From: Vic Smith Date: 22 Apr 13 - 01:20 PM Stayed with Andrew & Sheila in Scone several times after Blairgowrie/Kinross Festivals and arranged a folk club tour for her in the S.E. that included our club in Lewes and Isabel Sutherland's club in Groombridge. Many happy memories of tine in their company. |

Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: GUEST,Alasdair Roberts Date: 23 Apr 13 - 12:31 PM Sad news... I never met Sheila but I pulled her book 'The Sang's the Thing' from my shelf just a couple of days ago - as Anne Neilson says 'in the search for grand songs.' Rest in peace. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: Paul Davenport Date: 23 Apr 13 - 12:38 PM Great lady, sad day. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: Richard Hardaker Date: 23 Apr 13 - 06:51 PM I remember Sheila as one of the stalwarts of the Newcastleton festival of twenty and more years ago, as ceilidh compere and competition judge. (as was Ray Fisher) I believe her and Andrew were at the first ever festival in 1970. I always hoped we'd see her there again one year, sadly not to be. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 24 Apr 13 - 06:53 AM Sad news indeed. Whenever I was stuck on some point or other about Scottish folksong or lore I would phone Sheila and she always seemed to have the answer. It was also a joy to call at her home, just to hear her talk and sing. I am sure that I am not the only person who will miss her. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: GUEST,John Moulden Date: 24 Apr 13 - 08:09 AM I first met Sheila at the Keele Festival in 1969 and irregularly but very pleasurably since then, though not since Andrew's death. I much appreciate all she did and read her books and articles with interest. Our last exchange was in the pages of Living Tradition a few years ago(1995) when we discussed the health of the Scottish and Irish singing traditions. She was a great spirit, a great mind and, what is more important, a most assiduous searcher after truth. Her sons had a mother to be proud of. I am sorry that she is no longer with us. |
Subject: RE: Obit:--Sheila Douglas 19 April 2013 From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 24 Apr 13 - 10:10 AM I was in Edinburgh for the Tradsong Forum when the news broke. She would doubtless have been there if she'd been able to make it. A grand and immensely erudite person who seemed able to make a song up on every subject under the sun. I wonder how many songs she's made about heaven since she got there? |
