When I was about 7 years old in rural eastern Pennsylvania, I heard this from a playmate:

Reuben, Reuben, I've been thinkin'
What the hell have you been drinkin'?
If the world was made of glass,
You'd go sliding on your ass.

Anyone else remember bawdy verses to this song?

And yes, I am aware of "Virgin Sturgeon" (It's in the DT).

But I'm specifically looking for bawdy verses that start: "Reuben, Reuben ..."

Just so you know someone's noticing, I've never run across this.

Are you sure the singer hadn't just made it up?

My childhood version had the final couplet

Looks like whiskey, tastes like wine
Oh my god, it's turpentine.

Thanks, Guest! And yes, Lighter, I'd begun to think no one else had ever heard any such verses. Very relieved to find that others have.

Anyone else? The more's the merrier!

Bob

A polite version appears on the above site.

The first line seems to be derived from: Reuben and Rachel and seems to have given rise to several variations on the theme of your lines. See for example the spoofs here (half-way down the page): Reuben, Reuben. (also sometimes Rubin, Rubin).

Mick
