Sounds good. Who is Mary Lomax, and what is her connection to the book?

Mary Lomax is a fine traditional singer from Georgia (no relation to John or Alan Lomax).
You can hear a sample of her singing on Youtube

Dick showed it to me yesterday when Lady Hillary and I dropped by. A lot of variant lyrics and melodies, plus 2 CD's with Lomax and her neighbors singing. Great book

Does anybody know of a UK based supplier of this book? None of the usual suspects are listing it.

In fact if anyone knows the name of the publisher, or any other bibliographic detail, that would be a great help.

Fred, the OP states that it's published by CAMSCO Music, which is Dick Greenhaus and based in the U.S. I assume he'll return and let you know your options in the UK.

I haven't tried to promote the book in the UK. Unlike CAMSCO's other publications, which are printed on-demand in both the UK and the US, The Mary Lomax Ballad Book includes two CDs, which means that I have to assemble them in the US and ship them (which gets pricey). If there's a UK demand, I can arrange to have the books (without CDs) printed in the UK, and supply the CDs (with self-adhesive sleeves) separately for the price of postage only.
I think it's a good book (but then again, that's the only kind of book I publish)

Have you promoted this to the usual book vendors that libraries go through? Blackwell, etc?

I don't know about Blackwell, but the usual book vendors I'v encountered demand a discount high enough to scuttle the entire operation.I'm open to specific suggestions, though.

I may be a little late to the party here, but I produce a show called Backroads & Banjos with Art Rosenbaum on AM 1690 in Atlanta. Tomorrow we've got a special on at 8:30am, 1:20pm, and 6:30pm about the ballad book if you want to hear more about Mary and hear some of the singing from the book. It really is a beautiful book and CAMSCO did a lovely job printing this collection. You can listen online @ 1690wmlb.com if you're interested.

Dick Greenhaus says that CAMSCO publishes only good books, but I bet even he would concede that few are as good as this one. If it had been published 50 years ago, it would be a classic. To be published in the 21 st is a miracle, somewhere between turning water in to wine and turning a tadpole in to a frog.

My statement that CAMSCO publishes only good (IMO) books is a result of the nature of the operation. We don't have to release anything we don't think is good. So, whether we're talking about our reprint editions (Bronson's Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads or his Singing Traditions of the Child Ballads; Sharp's English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, Peggy Seeger's Essential Ewan MacColl Songbook)or our new books (Stuart Frank's Jolly Sailors Bold orThe New Book of Pirate Songs or Rosenbaum's The Mary Lomax Ballad Book or our Occasional Papers in Folklore series, we think each of them is good book and a worthwhile addition to the available literature of folklore and folksong. If we didn't, we wouldn't publish it.

I hope you didn't take umbrage at my post: I meant it as a compliment. I wasn't trying to poor mouth your other publications. I was just trying to say that it is amazing to me that you you can find someone in the 21st century who sings all those wonderful versions of old songs.

I am interested in buying this Ballad book, since I have learned much
from Art Rosenbaum's earlier projects over the years.
--But I live overseas in Europe, and
I couldn't find the book listed at the Camsco webpage.--

His Art of Mountain Banjo book update printed the complete lyrics
which wasn't in the Kicking Mule edition.
And in John Burke's out-of-print banjo book he had some lyrics for Jaybird
(one 'verse'), lots of good stuff,
but two LPs remain out of print, (Elektra & Kicking Mule (1 LP each).

The Elektra LP is ' Folk Banjo Styles ' (1960s) 'Goodbye Old Booze - song (not Poole's version).
, and Kicking Mule - Five String Banjo LP (, 1973-74, rec 1972)

...got a bit away from the book subject here -- I send you an email later, mr Greenhaus.

The two Art of Field Recording CD box sets are terrific. The Mary Lomax Ballad Book is a fun journey through a collection of interesting songs.

The Mary Lomax Ballad Book is the only CAMSCO publication that we can't get printed in the UK---it includes two CDs, which have to be inserted by me, here in the States. The price of the book including shipping to the UK is $59.50 ( $37.50 + $22.40 postage).

I could have the book printed and delivered within the UK (29 GBPounds) without the CDs, and send the CDs (and self-adhesive sleeves separately (for about 3 GBPounds) if anyone wished. I take PayPal (dick @ camscomusic.com)   I take no reponsibility for transAtlantic postal rates.

Thanks for the answer.

Is the CDs always inside the book or do they take up extra place ?

CDs can be sent within cartonnage or uploaded temporarily to a Download service like DropBox - the sleeves could be sent inside the book.

I don't live in UK, so best would be to send it directly to my adress, even if done in separate packages.

22.40 dollars shipping seems like most US stores take for bigger books.

The only ones I know who don't need to charge that are the big ones... due to the USPS new ship prices.

Agree about the Art of Field recording boxes, there is even a library over here that has those.

The CDs live in vinyl envelopes in the inner back cover of the book. (They could, of course, be kept separately , in jewel cases or whatever.)

(Tested Opera's browser , and it is much faster than iE9 & Firefox for this website for some reason.)

btw :

The Camsco webpage looks great, with lots of good info , but I hope the Mary Lomax book could be listed there too, even if it isn't printed in UK.

It will be. I'm in the (slow) process of rebuilding the CAMSCO website.
BTW, the Mary Lomax book can be printed in UK, but the printer can't insert the CDs

I was amazed at the cost of shipping from US to the EU. I paid thirty bucks to ship a book to Martin Ryan in Ireland, and it wasn't a very big book. It sure used to be a lot cheaper.

Joe- It's because the USPS has discontinued "book bags"---the international equivalent of media mail.
