I would love the music and lyrics to this song I sang in school in 1959.

Little poppy dark eyed maiden,
From the hills around Tibet.
Is there no one there to love you?
Dum dee dum, da da da dee....

I also sang this song in school. All I can remember is:

Little poppy dark-eyed maiden from the fields around Tepic,
If there's no one there to love you, send your dark rued to me.

Little Poppy Dark Eyed Maiden from the fields around the tepic,
if there's no one to love you give your fond heart to me.
Waken Poppy. Awaken. Early as the morning sun begins to....

That's all I remember.

To add to what others remember:

Waken poppy awaken early as the sun rise above the dew
and the birds sing ov'r the valley happy birthday to you.

This is what I remember from elementary school. I've often tried to remember and sing this.

From The Canadian Singer, Book Five, by John W. Beattie, et al. (Toronto : W. J. Gage & Co., Ltd., 1947), page 131-2:

MORNING SERENADE
Words, "Translated"; Music, "Mexican Folk Song"

1. Little Poppy, dark-eyed maiden
From the fields around Tepic,
If there's no one there to love you,
Give your fond heart to me.
Now the morning sun is rising,
Tinting red the eastern sky.
Waken, Poppy, dark-eye maiden,
As your love passes by.
Waken, Poppy; awaken early,
As the sun's rays begin to show
And the birds sing o'er the valley
In the morning's soft glow.

2. If the watchman of the plaza
Wants my gratitude to see,
He will shade his little lantern
Till my love passes me.
Thank you now, O Mister Watchman,
For your thoughtfulness and care.
You may light your little lantern.
No one saw her pass there.
Waken, Poppy; the birds are singing.
Clouds are dressed in their brightest hue.
All the morning bells are ringing
Happy Birthday to you.

[The acknowledgments page has the following note:]

"Morning Serenade" arranged by Manuel Ponce.

Thank you very much, Jim. Now, can anyone identify the Mexican folk song this comes from? Q would know this right away. I think I know, but won't say anything now.

No answers? The big breakthrough came with the post on July 6, and I take it the guest on July 14 knew the answer. The "Poppy" is misleading - it can be any name. It's the usual birthday song, Las Mañanitas.
