Subject: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,mg Date: 30 Apr 13 - 01:45 AM I just read John Sheahan has left the group..after almost 50 years..and they are no longer called the Dubliners..but the Dublin Legend or something like that. Wow...surprised no one mentioned it..maybe they did. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Apr 13 - 02:08 AM Wikipedia tells the story of the group quite well. The Dubliners announced their retirement in the autumn of 2012, after 50 years of playing, following the death of founding member Barney McKenna. However, the surviving members of the group - with the exception of John Sheahan - continue touring in 2013 under the name of "The Dublin Legends". -Joe- |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 30 Apr 13 - 05:05 AM The original (founding) members are all dead. It was an appropriate decision to call it a day. It was becoming much like Abraham Lincoln's hammer, the head had been replaced twice and the handle three times, but they still called it Lincoln's hammer. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Bren Ború Date: 30 Apr 13 - 06:14 AM On a point of order....One of the original members (John Sheahan) is thankfully still very much alive and well. All of the other originals (Ciaran Bourke, Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew and Barney McKenna) have passed on to the great session in the sky. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,grumpy Date: 30 Apr 13 - 09:51 AM On a further point of order, John Sheahan was not an original member. He didn't join until 1964. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 30 Apr 13 - 09:57 AM Sheahan wasn't actually one of the founder members. He was only asked to join after a while. FWIW, RTE had a nice documentary about Sheahan and the Dubliners recently with loads of stories and old footage. Worth seeing although the ydon't seem to have it archived on hteir site |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Jim McLean Date: 30 Apr 13 - 12:03 PM I was their road manager in1967 and the only member who didn't drink was John Sheahan ..... a moral there somewhere? |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Johnny J Date: 30 Apr 13 - 12:30 PM The continuing kine up are coming to my town next month. They have Gerry (Banjo) O'Connor with them. So, they should still put on a good show. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Bren Ború Date: 30 Apr 13 - 01:38 PM Appologies to Peter Laban, you are quite right. I was under a mis-apprehension. Next time instead of opting for a point of order I will order a pint! |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Leadfingers Date: 30 Apr 13 - 04:00 PM Makes sense that the new line up shoukd change the group name , but as long as they maintain the Dubs trdition , Good Luck to them |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,SirCoughsalot Date: 30 Apr 13 - 07:33 PM Well, they had a good run, and they're all incredible musicians. I was heartbroken by the death of Barney McKenna. If it wasn't for the Dubliners, I wouldn't be playing any kind of music at all. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Jim Martin Date: 01 May 13 - 05:39 AM The RTE John Sheahan doc link: http://www.rte.ie/tv/programmes/johnsheahanadubliner.html |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 May 13 - 05:46 AM Thanks Jim, but that's just the blurb. On another look it IS still available to watch : John Sheahan : Dubliner They keep programs there for a month after broadcast. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: Dave Hanson Date: 01 May 13 - 06:23 AM Seems it's ' not available ' in my region, England. Dave H |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,guest Date: 01 May 13 - 02:13 PM It's only available in Ireland I'm afraid. |
Subject: RE: No more Dubliners? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 May 13 - 02:33 PM In an earlier documentary Sheahan told how they played a festival somewhere. Stephan Grapelli, who Sheahan has great admiration for, also played there and Sheahan knew he had attended their concert. The next day they met Grapelli having a swim in the hotel swimming pool and got talking. Sheahan hoped to get Grapelli to give him an opinion on his fiddle playing. Grapelli however only said 'Monsieur Sheahan, you play the tin whistle very well'. Years later they could have a laugh at it. I found this just now, a bit of a departure from their regular stuff and fair play to them. |
