Subject: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: YorkshireYankee Date: 18 May 13 - 04:02 PM Found on the BBC news website: In pictures: A journey through the English ritual year A bit of the accompanying copy: "Ever since encountering Deptford Jack welcoming in the summer in London, photographer Sara Hannant has gone on a journey around England to capture rituals which mark the changing seasons. The Hollyman in this photo wassails (toasts) the people of London and River Thames on Twelfth Night - the end of Christmas festivities - to encourage a fertile year ahead." Great stuff! Should we introduce her to Doc Rowe? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: Dead Horse Date: 19 May 13 - 11:53 AM Nice to see a couple of genuine folk legends alongside the modern made-up dross. How was the harvest in Deptford this year? :-) |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 19 May 13 - 04:25 PM I think Doc Rowe will already know Sara - they have both exhibited at the same exbition (in Eastbourne last year) and Sara was at the opening of Doc's exhibition in Stowmarket a year back. Sara also has a book out of her photos. Derek |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: YorkshireYankee Date: 20 May 13 - 12:02 PM Thanks, Derek. Pleased to know they know each other. BTW, according to one of the later photo captions: "Ms Hannant's exhibition, called Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids: A Journey Through the English Ritual Year, is on tour and is at the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock until 28 July." I've been googling to see when it might get to/near Sheffield, but can't find any info about future destinations. I did note that the EFDSS is promoting this exhibit (well done!), so perhaps you can provide further info, Derek? Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 20 May 13 - 01:02 PM The exhibition did go to Cecil Sharp House. I don't know any details of future exhibition locations, but you can contact Sara herself via her website. Derek |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: Les in Chorlton Date: 21 May 13 - 11:27 AM Great photos, great exhibition I guess. Does anybody really care what is 'true' and what is made up? Not keen on those Druids - aren't they a 19C invention who have nothing to do with Stonehenge and rather to much to do with Ken barlow/Bill Roach? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Great photos of 'English Ritual Year' From: Desert Dancer Date: 21 May 13 - 12:03 PM About the book, at Sara Hannant's site. Her Exhibitions page doesn't show any after The Oxfordshire Museum (it's there until 28 July), but you can encourage your local museum to contact the Horniman: Touring Exhibitions dept.. ~ Becky in Tucson |
