From: Dave the Gnome

Dunno if it is a change to the 'cat or a change to Firefox. Where once submitting a post or hitting 'back' from within a thread used to take you back to the thread list at the position you left it, it now, after a brief flash of the last position, takes you back to the top. IE is fine and still takes you to where you left off. Not a big problem - Just wondering if there is anything I could or should do.

My IE is 10.0.6 while Firefox is 5.0

Cheers

DtG

That's an old Firefox you are using, Dave. Have you tried updating it? The version on the machine I'm on is 21.0
At first I was guessing you were using Linux (different sequence of issues of Firefox) but as you mention IE I'm guessing not. I haven't noticed the problem you mention, I'll try with this post.

Firefox seems to work fine for me: v.21.0 on an elderly MacBook and whatever I have on windows 7, both of which I keep updated. But the iPad is a different story (Max, ya listening?) or at least it was last time I used it.

The bookmark would bring up Mudcat as per normal, then after a few seconds would shift to a page full of Chinese text (no pictures, just a cartoon-y logo of some sort). I didn't click on anything but did reload numerous times, after having switched off and then back on and re-typed the address manually - but it kept doing it. It's like the URL (which was the normal one and didn't change) had been hijacked. But only on the iPad. Weird.

I checked the iPad again just now (9 or 10 hours later) - still getting hi-jacked to that weird Chinese-looking thing, tho it may only be a translation page. But it seems to be laid out in boxes rather then lists of titles. Lots of blue text, just like Mudcat in English and no pix. I don't know WHAT it is!

I'm on the latest version of Firefox, and the back button now takes me back to the top of the page instead of where I was before.

It's not a problem, just feckin irritating.

Ditto to Dave H, above. Sorry all - It is Firefox 21. I don't mind being laughed at so here goes - 5 was the version on the example and I had lost the actual version behind the help screen :-) Hehehe.

It's odd that this only happens in Firefox. The behaviour seems to be limted to the thread list - clicking 'Back' to other pages returns to the previous position.

Now on a Linux machine, same Firefox result (though I find that the differing sequence I mentioned upthread is now no more, this one is also on FF 21.0)

Still don't view it as a big problem, just an oddity.

It's not only in Firefox. I just tried Konqueror (Linux KDE browser) with the same result. I don't have any other browsers to try.

Even odder - with Iceweasel, the'Back' returns to the expected spot, then skips to the top. After it's done this, if I hit F5 (refresh) it does it again - brings up the refreshed page at the lower point, then skips to the top.

It's an annoyance - no other web pages display this behaviour.

Lately I have acquired the habit, whenever I see a link I want to follow, I RIGHT-click on it and then select "Open link in new tab."

I think there are some web sites (not Mudcat) that automatically refresh the page when you go back to it by using the "back" button, but not when you go back to it by switching tabs. It annoys me when this happens, because, as you said, it makes it hard to find the spot on the page where you left off reading. Opening a new tab solves this problem.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat acting differently in Firefox?
From: Newport Boy

No - it's not any change in Firefox. I'm using Iceweasel (Debian rebranded Firefox) version 19, installed on 19 May. This behaviour only started a month later and it also happens using Konqueror.

It is Mudcat's front page that has changed, although it affects only some browsers. I've noted the following:

1. Back button to Mudcat - returns to where I left, then jumps to top of page.

2. F5 (after the last step) - returns to down page, then jumps to top.

3. Address mudcat.org/#BS - opens at BS, then jumps to top of page.

I can find no other page on the web that does this (I haven't checked them all).

It's a significant annoyance, and I no longer look at BS at all because of it.

Phil

The weird behavior in Firefox doesn't happen on this machine, so it possibly has to do with something I have blocked. I just tried un-blocking a couple things and nothing changed, so I don't know what might be causing it.

More data - I decided to see what happened using my virtual XP install.

Firefox 20, no add-ons - behaved as my post 6 July
Firefox then auto-upgraded to v22
Firefox 22, no add-ons - behaved as my post 6 July

Realised that IE was probably there somewhere - turned out to be IE8. I've never intentionally used this, although I suspect XP may have used it for upgrades, etc.

IE8 - first try back button:
1. direct to top of front page. Dialog box wanting to install Simplified Chinese to display correctly!
2. Cancel dialog box
3. Jump to correct location after about 2 secs.

Disabled character set dialog

IE8 - direct to top front page (took 3 secs to load) then jump to correct location.

The Mudcat front page coding is screwed.

Yet more data. Installed Opera & Chrome in virtual XP.

Opera - back button goes direct to top of front page
mudcat.org/#BS goes to top, then down to BS, then after 1 sec, back to top

Chrome - Back button goes direct to top
mudcat.org/#BS goes correctly to BS
F5 from BS goes to top of page.

There's something non-standard in the coding to get this much variation in behaviour.

FWIW, I have read & written Mudcat for many years in a deviant browser called Conkeror, which piggybacks on Firefox 16.0, running under Windows XP 2002. Its main feature is that it allows you to avoid using the mouse by causing all the links on the screen to be numbered, so that you can "click" on them by typing the numbers. It behaved to my satisfaction until a few days ago. Since then, when I access the list of postings, the page is not "focused", so I have to hit ESC twice before it will respond to the keyboard. (It does still respond to the mouse, FWIW.) No other sites, and no other pages within the Mudcat, misbehave in that way.

Sounds like it's a double-bug, the Fox stalking the Cat.
Looking up the FFX 21 changes, I see they've changed the DOM definition of window.location to add a new .origin property. If MC uses this as a default it could have the effect described.

Well - it looks like the changes to the page coding to include the 2345, etc calls are also the cause of the aberrant behaviour.

This version of FF (19) on which I have blocked the 2345 addresses works correctly. FF22 on XP and all my other browsers, on which I've not blocked the addresses behave wrongly.

That's as I find it, anyway.

Found it. Used to be a Button said Show Cookies but now there's a less obvious text link
Didn't make any difference

I, too, spoke too soon. The pest came back again.

It now jumps to the bottom with me too. Is it a Firefox thing or has the code been altered here?

Cheers

It's not just Firefox. Does it with Google Chrome too.

FF 22.0 here

Not noticed much, but Lyrics & Knowledge seems to open at the bottom instead of the top.

Worth adding that I get this when I go to the main page no matter what.

this happens to me (scrolls to the bottom) also
both on Firefox 22 and Chrome
but not on Internet Explorer
I am using Windows 7

on Chrome the black bar at the top
"support mudcat by shopping at Amazon" appears
but that does not appear on Firefox or Internet Explorer
is that somehow involved in this strange behavior??

It makes going through the posts somewhat tedious, annoying

The bottom is where the big advert is.

Is this significant?

Laptop was running a little slow today. Mudcat hung while waiting for
www.2345.com

Only after that did it scroll to the bottom of the page.
