One of the members of the video gaming website I belong to lives in Phoenix, AZ and is interested in finding out about local folk music in the area. Any good local venues that have any folk music? Any sessions? Local performers?

Matt's one of my young converts, thanks to my Folk Friday blogs. Any help would be appreciated.

Fid's is the perfect starting recommendation.

In addition to that, there is a weekly event called The Beaded Lizard Gathering. Wednesdays at a place called Beatitudes (Bethany Home and 17thish Ave). Starts with an open jam, in round robin fashion, from 6pm-7pm. Then from 7-9, there are 2 or 3 scheduled performances.

The Glendale Folk Festival, held every March, is probably my favorite in AZ. There are also Folk Festivals in Prescott, Flagstaff, Wickenburg and Tucson other times of the year.

Joe Bethencourt is worth checking out. He been playing regularly in Phoenix since the 70's, and he's got a crazy website too.

I need to correct that...Beatitudes is on Glendale Ave, not Bethany Home!

1610 W Glendale Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85021

Phoenix Traditional Music & Dance is the local contra and English country dance organization. The dances are a good place to meet people who are into the music.
