Subject: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: Mr Happy Date: 17 Jul 13 - 08:04 AM I'm going to try out this fine song for the 1st time in our sesh tonight. Here it is to share: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow (Lyrics J.M. Devine. [Newfoundland. C 1930] Music, Peter McNulty) The[G] autumn days are here again The[C] night winds chilly[G] blow The woodland turns to[D7] golden[Em] hue And the[G] harvest moon's a[D7]glow I [G] dream again of[D7] days long[Em] past To[G] come no more I[D7] know When I[G] mowed Pat[C] Murphy's[G] meadow In the[C] sunny long a[G]go I see the blue of ocean and the distant sails afar As the maiden in the meadow strikes up ''Dark Lough Na Gar'' There was music soft and tender in the winds that whisper low When I mowed Pat Murphy's meadow in the sunny long ago Where are the happy boys and girls that danced the gay quadrille Or the singer warbling sweetly of ''The Burning Granite Mill'' To hear again at sunset ''Where Sweet Afton's Waters Flow'' When I mowed Pat Murphy's meadow in the sunny long ago Those days are but a memory like the snow of yesteryear When evening shades are falling all alone I shed a tear On my cheek I feel the soft touch of the winds that whisper low When I mowed Pat Murphy's meadow in the sunny long ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq-PmgoI28g |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: Gutcher Date: 17 Jul 13 - 02:01 PM Nice song sung by P.J.Murrihy--I suspect "Dark Lochnagar" is Lord Byron"s song of the same title, " Where Sweet Afton"s Waters Flow" would be Burns"s " Flow Gently Sweet Afton". Anyone come across "The Burning Granite Mill?. In Stansfields pub on Main Street, Dromahaire, Co. Leitrim an advert can be seen for a brand of cigarettes called "Sweet Aftons" popular at one time in Ireland. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: mg Date: 17 Jul 13 - 03:03 PM It is a great song. Once it made its inevitable way to Ireland it got really slowed down. They sing it much faster in NF and also more syncopated. I am going to sing it on our next Irish cd. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: Gutcher Date: 17 Jul 13 - 05:07 PM The Irish version suites my speed of singing nowadays. "The Burning Granite Mill" mentioned in the third verse it turns out is a song composed to commemorate a tragic fire that burned down the mill with the loss of many lifes on Sept. 19th. 1874, in Fall River, Massachusetts. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Jul 13 - 11:50 PM The more usual title of this song is PAT MURPHY'S MEADOW. It has been recorded under that title by Barleycorn, Margaret Bennett, Cantus Vocum Chamber Choir, Celtic Moods, Celtic Orchestra, Joe Cullen, Tommie Cunniffe, Sean Dunphy, The Gaelforce Orchestra, Gulliver's Spree, The Irish Descendants, Pat Kane, Tony Kenny, Bob MacDonald, Johnny McEvoy, Ray McLean, The McNulty Family, P.J. Murrihy, Daniel O'Donnell, Tony O'Rourke, Paddy Reilly, The Sign Posters, and Sean Wilson. And there is another thread about it: Lyr Req: Pat Murphy's Meadow (J. M. Devine)—that contains 2 copies of the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow From: Mr Happy Date: 18 Jul 13 - 02:41 AM Jim, Thanks for link to other thread. I'm always reluctant in starting new ones unless I've searched first. It didn't come up, so I guess it's not wkg properly. ********** I tried the song last night, but I'll perhaps change the tempo a little as mentioned above. Regards, Mr H |
