This is an edited thread for recording signups for workshops for the San Francico Folk Music Club's Camp New Harmony. The camp is held the week after Christmas every year at Camp Newman, on the road between Calistoga and Santa Rosa, California. The camp Website is http://sffmc.org/harmony_body.html.
Registration for camp opened September 15. Dates for camp are Friday, December 27, 2013, ending on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.

I'm going to use this as an edited thread to record pre-camp signups for workshops. We expect, as usual, that most people will sign up for workshops after they get to camp.

So, the idea is this: if you're attending camp and you'd like to lead a workshop, scroll down and post a message at the end of this thread with the following information: Your name Name of the workshop Preferred time and day Preferred location I'll enter the information in the charts below. I can't guarantee time and location, but I'll do the best I can to balance things.

Meal Times:

• Cold breakfast 8:00am to 10:15am
• Hot breakfast: 9am to 10:15am (food put away at 10:30am)
  (everyone out of the dining hall by 10:45am)
  
• Lunch: 1-2:30 pm (food put way at 2:45pm)
  (everyone out of the dining hall by 3:00pm)
  
• Dinner: 6:30 – 7:30pm (seconds bell rung at 7:30) food put away at 8pm

Camp Harmony got its name because it used to meet at Camp Harmon, outside Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz mountains. The camp moved in about 2010 to Camp Newman, on the road between Santa Rosa and Calistoga. It then became Camp New Harmony. Camp Newman will hold 600 campers, but we usually have 300-350 participants. That gives us lots of extra room.
Camp Newman is in the middle of a huge reconstruction project that will replace most of the housing we use. This link will lead you to information about the first six of a projected 16 new cabins.
Once the 16 cabins are completed, the camp will construct a new dining hall. By the time we're old and grey, we will be able to camp in luxury.
In the meantime, it's still a wonderful place to have our camp.

There's lots of parking on the road to Upper Village, so park your car and take the bus.

Hi Joe,
I'd like to host a workshop on shape note singing midday (12 to 1 or 1 to 2) on Monday.
(By host, I mean that I'll bring a stack of booklets with 32 songs from The Sacred Harp, that we've used in workshops at the SF Free Folk Festival many times.) Reuben's House would be nice for it, but other places would work too.

I see that you already have shape note singing scheduled on Sunday morning, but I won't be getting to camp until late Sunday afternoon, so perhaps someone else can lead that one? And anyway, you can never be too thin nor have too many shape note singing workshops!

I usually do a beginning guitar workshop.
We'll be coming up Sunday afternoon, perhaps Monday or Tuesday some time from noon on would be good.

Lastly, I will be arriving at noon Friday at Oakland, and I will need a ride out to camp and I will need to be at the Oakland Airport by 11:50 on the first. I don't know if you are the right person to arrange that.

Hi, Fred - I'll put you in touch by e-mail with Deborah Sandler and Daniel Hersh and Shelby Solomon, who have usually been at least part of the group organizing our Shabbat service at Camp Harmony/New Harmony. Although workshops don't really begin until Saturday, it might be good to have Shabbat before or after dinner on Friday.
Since we meet at a Jewish camp, the cook always makes terrific challah for Shabbat - but we have to bring our own wine.

Workshops are fifty minutes long, but often extend to an hour. Certain workshops are two hours, but that's by exception.

As at the Getaway, song lyrics handouts are generally not considered kosher, but they sometimes work well for specific workshops. The general practice is to sing your own song in a workshop, and then the next person sings his/her own song. Songs with choruses work especially well.

I'm going to say that there are no copying facilities available for camper use. We do print copies of the daily schedule and there may be a scanner on that printer, but that's something I don't know. I do know that the printer is not offered for general use because we need to make sure it's available and has supplies enough for printing the schedule. So, figure that there is no copy making capability at camp.

I hadn't thought of arranging rides (and don't want to volunteer for the task), but I think we can use this thread quite nicely for that purpose. I'll re-post your request.

I'm going to say this with some trepidation because there are a number of exceptions, but in general, people don't host more than two or three workshops at Camp New Harmony. An exception is the daily caller's workshop in the dance hall, and standard things like the ballads workshops and the Triple Crown and (of course) Improv Chinese opera with Zurnas.

my two series workshop (ltune learning by ear) will only need one hour each day and i would like to take the 2:00 - 2:50pm spot and free the 3-3:50 workshop spots on monday and tuesday for someone else....did not mean to post a two hour consecutive workshop.....also a more accurate description would be, 'learn to play a 3 tune set by ear' (melody and chords) for strings and wind and free reed aerphone (concertinas and accordians)///thanks and holiday hugs :-)

I'll be taking workshop requests here at Mudcat until camp begins on Friday, but it's much easier for me if you submit your online requests by the end of the day tomorrow, December 24. After that, I'll have to rely on the camp's Internet connection to get information posted here. That Internet connection has worked for me most of the time at camp, but not always.

And you can schedule workshops with yellow sticky notes once you arrive at camp, so I will shut down Mudcat requests once the schedule boards go up at camp on Friday.

As you may have noticed in the workshop schedule, Hali & I will be leading a session singing Peace & Justice Songs on Tuesday 31 December, 11 am - 12 noon in Ruben's House. One of our sources for the songs will be the Rise Up Singing songbook. We will have a few copies of it at the session. If you have a copy, please bring it.

Bring your favorite song or two related to the theme of the session. These are the chapters of the Rise Up Singing book that may have the kinds of songs we are looking for:

Fixed it. Thanks for catching that, Karen. You motivated me to double-check all thre requests, and I think they're all right now. Of course, one gets bug-eyed after staring at spreadsheets like this, so mistakes are still a possibility.

I was thinking of doing an Intro to the Hammer Dulcimer workshop?? For like total beginners who maybe have never seen the instrument or those that have, that were interested in how it is structured and how do you play it?? I have three that I could bring down with me... Your thoughts....

Hi, Julie - I think you'd find people who would really enjoy it. Just pick a time and space. The Front Room or Mirrored Room might be easy access for transporting hammer dulcimers. I'm leaving for camp now for early setup, but I'll see any requests people post on this Mudcat thread.

I've looked at the schedules. If you think it's something we should try, I was looking at Monday, 11:00am, in the mirror room. I was trying to think of a space that would be big enough, but not too cold, that I could easily get all the dulcimers to.... Would this room be your suggestion?

I got to camp Thursday evening. It was 45 degrees in Santa Rosa, but 31 degrees at camp. Dress accordingly.
The new Field Cabins are very nice, but parking is limited nearby.

Please bring yoga mat or a blanket and Rise Up Singing songbooks.

The weather is delightful in the afternoon here at camp, and lots of music is moving outdoors. Still cold nights and mornings, so dress accordingly. I'm updating all schedules above at midnight every day, with a quick lunchtime update of the schedule for the particular day (e.g., my lunchtime update for today is just on the Saturday schedule).

If you are using wifi on your smart phone at camp, please turn off wifi when you're not using it. The internet service here is "country style," not the generous service you city folk are used to.

The "Goofy" Concert this evening was a huge success, with Mary Hill and Laurie Story Vela as our absolutely crazy emcees. Most fun I've ever had at a concert, I think.
The concert began with a performance of morris dancers (molly dancers) in chicken costumes, beating each other with rubber chickens instead of swords. The best Morris dance parody I've ever seen. Then Sadie Damascus read a hilarious set of directions for making gefilte fish. And there was a song about pigs being in love, and lots more.
