A fine programme on Radio 4 today about Nic Jones, which captured, for me at least, something of his unique quirky personality, and a pretty good assessment of his music - plus the man himself talking to the interviewer at the end.

I was saddened. Though I've not seen him I've seen various recent accounts of him making stage appearances. No mention here - rather that he'd left it all behind?

Why saddened jhw? And why "rather that he'd left it all behind?" I've been to two of those performances. I never saw Nic perform in the earlier days, and, indeed, never thought I would see him live at all. The performance on the South Bank with Joe and Belinda O'Hooley was a very emotional thing ... and I have to admit to having had tears in my eyes (in common with most of those around me). And this was not just because Nic was on stage again, but because it was quite clear that he he still had "it" , and moreover was enjoying himself. By the time we got to the EFDSS gold medal award at Cecil Sharp House this was even more evident. I look forward to seeing the Nic Jones trio in action again somewhere ... and if the CD that I have heard about comes out I shall certainly be buying a copy. Not out of retrospective emotion, but because it will be worth hearing! And yes, the programme was good - I look forward to the TV documentary when it comes out later this year.

I was very moved by the participation of his Halliard colleague and the personal
accounts he gave. But as the song insists: live in the "Now".

He never actually gave up hope, which the programme [which I found a little bitty & repetitive, but many thanks for posting!] didn't emphasise enough. I think I have told before how they & we lived in quite close N Cambs villages and I regularly reviewed his records as they appeared, so we knew one another well socially and often exchanged visits. We were among the first to visit, I think, when he was into initial recovery. Julia called & asked us round for tea one day. She and Helen & Joe were a bit muted but trying to make best of situation. Nic at one stage picked up his fiddle, which he could manage a bit tho the guitar was beyond him then, and scraped a melody; so I picked up a guitar, miraculously[?] in more or less accurate standard tuning that was by, and played along a few chords. He said, jokingly but with a sort of purposeful grin, "Shall we do gigs?" I think he meant to imply that he didn't think even then that he had given up for ever.

And now he is back!

Thank you, johnmc, that colleague would be me. What I sometimes refer to as my 'Now Moment' was one of those deeply personal occasions that remain in one's memory for ever. Nic was a true & trusted friend when we were at school together. His friendship & caring nature had waned not one jot when we met up again in 2005. Despite everything he'd endured, he was still there for me. A great Musician & a great Man whom I'm proud to call: 'Friend'.
