Hey kids,

I've been scouring the interwebs for this song. I used to hear Washboard Hank play this in Peterborough back in the early 90s, but haven't been able to find the lyrics, or even a YouTube video of it. I'm pretty sure Hank didn't write it, but have no idea who did.

Had kind of a bluegrass feel. The chorus was:

That'll learn ya, dern ya.
Dern ya, that'll learn ya.
(Something something something something) heart
That'll learn ya, dern ya.
Dern ya, that'll learn ya.
That'll teach you not to be so smart.

Any ideas of the full lyrics to the song?

Thanks,
Paul

The lyrics were posted by Steve back in 2005.

Once you called me darlin', and told me that you loved me,
That I was the only one for you,
You taught me every lesson of how to keep 'em guessin',
But now look who's tired and weary, too.

Chorus: That'll learn ya, durn ya, durn ya, that'll learn ya',
Not to break a true and trusting heart,
That'll learn ya, durn ya, durn ya, that'll learn ya'
That'll teach you not to be so smart.

You were just a smarty who never missed a party,
You ran around and never stayed at home,
I was left a'waitin, while you were celebratin'
Waitin' through the weary nights alone.

chorus

Your cheatin' and your lyin' brought heartaches and sighin'
I cried for you until my poor eyes burned,
I listened to your teachin', your talkin' and your preachin'
Every year was misery while I learned.

chorus

That's from the Maddox Brothers and Rose. Coincidentally, I just got the above mentioned CD and decided to learn this song myself.

Steve"

STEVE! You're a hero. Thanks!

I'm playing an open stage on Monday. It's my eighteenth wedding anniversary, and eight months since I found out my wife considered our marriage "monogamy-optional". You have no idea how badly I wanted to play this song!

Thanks again,
Paul

Steve is a great guy, but this ain't Steve. That said, great choice of song, Paul. Best wishes to you.
