Subject: In the rainy season, waiting for the train
From: Holly Tannen
Date: 13 May 97 - 02:38 AM

One of my readers is looking for a song that begins, It was in the rainy season, waiting for the train/ Leaving in the afternoon, all on your own again.

Anyone know who wrote it, where she could find a recording and/or words?

I'll credit you in my SONGFINDER column in Sing Out! if you let me have your full name. Thanks! Holly

Looks like Sten wins the prize. Here are the lyrics from the URL (click) Sten provided. Follow the link for comments on the song.
Unfortunately, Holly no longer writes the "Songfinder" column in Sing Out!. She was replaced by Shelley Posen, who was replaced by Joe Hickerson. I like Joe, and I enjoyed Shelley's work on the column - but I miss Holly Tannen's goofiness. I've since met her a few times at San Francisco's Camp Harmony, and it has been a treat.

SO CLEAR
(apparently by John Renbourn)

It was in the rainy season
Waiting for the train
Leaving in the afternoon
All on your own again
Do you really understand it
Can you tell me why it is this way
Sad lady and her portmantle
With no words left to say
Saving that it's only something
That could happen anyway

Toulouse, circus rider
Turn on your childish grin
Shine on through the long black night
Go ride the dawn again
Your eyes are stars that sweetly twinkle
Aureola round your head of flame
Sad story that you cannot tell
Where no-one is to blame
And anyhow it's only something
Sure to come down with the rain

Would I could hear your song so clear
The words could touch the air
And catch the moons relection
In the colour of her hair
To ease this ache of loneliness
And ***.

Even now I do remember
One thing more that is not told
Just a slightly twisted crystal heart
To keep you from the cold
All up the coast along the highway
Nobody there will know your name
So strange how things should work out now
Yet still remain the same
And even though you know there's nothing
That can ever really change

*** Lyrics completed by Pat Henry based on personal communication with John Renbourn

I've always loved this song for some reason!
