After the Maine pre-Getaway bash last evening at SINSULL's today will be a day of packing and preparation.

We'll be taking Andrew and Carol to the bus station for their trek southward and then spending most of the day laundering and packing.

I have been a very bad influence on Claire, who now has a lot more 'stuff', found in thrift stores and yard sales, so we are going to have to work out what can be mailed back to California and what she will take with her.

I've got the Mummer's Play finery to sort out and an updated script to get done. Always at the last minute!

Well, I was planning to visit the Smithsonian Friday morning before Getaway, but with the government shutdown it is closed. Alternatives? The Corcoran Gallery, the Heurich House Museum. What else within easy walking distance?

Since I am leading a Hank Williams workshop, I had considered being driven to the Getaway in the back of a Cadillac, but really, why tempt fate? So I am flying in, arriving Reagan at 12:27 pm. I have a rental car reserved. Anyone needing a ride down to the shindig is welcome to PM me and we'll try to work it out.

Well, it gets closer and more exciting every day. The Brigadoon effect includes this pre-event salivation, knowing that the Magic Island is just around the corner. I suppose this is the way some young children get to feeling about going to Disneyland.

Sheryl and I will both be there. Although, we are coming from different directions this year and Sheryl will likely get there first. I have to go up to Atlantic City for a work conference the Wednesday before Getaway and won't be able to escape until sometime on Friday. Hopefully not too late in the day, but it's possible I won't make it to West River until midnight.

Better yet, maeve, auction off your contribution locally and start a "Getaway" nest egg so that you could grace us with your attendance! I don't doubt you could could get some help with the fees from the FSGW scholarship fund, but also understand there are other travel expenses.

I have no doubt that you would love the experience of the Getaway, and also have no doubt the Getaway would love the experience of your attendance!

Fervently hoping you can make it next year, KT. Hope Ebbie is starting a similar fund.

Amazing to me, the dedication folks have who don't live within a relatively easy drive, to save up to get there. Says a lot about the the wonderful experience the long dedication of people volunteering and involved with the FSGW has for so many of us who exist well outside the "Beltway."

Aw, Amos and Kendall, thanks so much for your kind welcome. Though I would dearly love to be there in person, it's just not possible this year. I AM looking into the possibilities for next year, though, and have started a "Getaway or Bust!" fund. A trip through beautiful Canada is quite enticing! In the meantime, I love picturing all of you together, sharing your music, laughter, camaraderie, and all manner of merriment! Enjoy the magic of the Getaway, everyone!

I'm flying into Hartford, CT, on Sept 26. I think I'll drive along Long Island and the Jersey Shore to Annapolis, and then back to Danbury after the Getaway for a family reunion. See you at the Getaway.
I had hoped to meet katlaughing one year at the Getaway. Alas, that is not to be.

Speaking of crossing the Rockies, I will be arriving at Dulles Thursday around 4pm. I would like to visit the Smithsonian Friday morning and I am hoping to get a ride out to Getaway. My plan is to get a hotel room for Thursday night.I also will need a ride out to Dulles Monday by 10:00am for a 12:20 flight.

Brevity is the soul of wit. Years ago a man I knew was running for Governor of Maine, and he asked me if I had any words of wisdom to share for his speeches. My only advice to him was, be accurate, be brief and be seated.
Few things are more irritating than someone in love with the sound of his own voice who drones on and on about some personal experience that no one else gives a rodent's rump to hear.
Story telling is a fine art with many facets, and a psychic connection with the audience is vital. If their eyes are glazed over, you have lost them and you probably wont get them back.
