The lastfm link isn't available to play any more.

Bella Hardy might sing in other parts of the programme but I think it is Cecelia Costello @ 22.50\24.30\25.30\27.10*

Here she is in a video by Alan Lomax

Not singing but reciting the *words. Sounds like the same voice to me though.

that was not Cecilia Costello, i have just listened to her singing the song on last fm, I am thinking it sounded like bella hardy. guest ed will you kindly go and listen to c costello singing the song on last fm, for a start cecilia has a completely different accent and sounds like a 60plus not a young singer,
which raises the question what are they all playing at, why could we not hear the source singer, to paraphrase Fred Trueman,"i really dont know whatthe bluddy ells going on out there"
http://www.last.fm/music/Cecilia+Costello/_/The+Grey+Ghostif anyone thinks the person singing on the bbc programme is cecilia costello, they need to get their ears tested. guest ed, if you think that is cecilia costello, you are tone deaf

Richard Mellish also thought it did not sound like her, to quote RichardMellish BUT it doesn't sound like her voice, and that verse isn't in the well known recording.
so guest Ed, your comment is not exactly helpful unless you can provide explanation as to why the missing verse is not in the well known recording, it would be helpful if you could provide some documentary evidence or evidence of any kind, then Richards query will be answered, in the meantime I would ask you kindly to provide some back up for your comment thankyou

I'm sorry Dick, but that was quite clearly Cecilia Costello, NOT Bella Hardy

Thanks for putting this up, good to hear trad music on national Wireless.
An improvement in my opinion would to have had source singers singing the songs.
I despair when psycho analysts start discussing folk music, suitable candidates for Pseuds corner in Private Eye.However the singing was of a high quality well done to all performers.

PS I sing that "missing" verse, but can't remember where I found it (decades ago)!

Richard - I started this thread (correct spelling!) yesterday, while the programme was on!

It's being repeated next Monday evening at 11.30.

I tried to correct the mistyped thread title before I sent the posting but it didn't work. Should be Tim van Eyken. Can someone put it right, please?

Richard

Can't see an existing thread about this. BBC Radio 4 11:30 on 1st Oct. I was alerted to it by an email from Bob Askew and have just listened.

Well worth a listen.

At the end someone sings a verse of The Grey Cock that I don't think I've ever heard before.
When she saw her own true love disappearing
'Tis down her pale cheeks in streams did flow.
"Oh weep no more for me dear Mary,
I am no more your Willie-o."

Then the announcer says that it was Cecilia Costello, recorded for the BBC on 30 Nov 1951. BUT it doesn't sound like her voice, and that verse isn't in the well known recording.

Anybody shed any light?

Richard
