I tried to post this morning but it seems mud cat does not like me. The following is an extract from a mail which popped into my in box:-

"I afraid I am the bearer of some unhappy news regarding Brian Dawson. We have had a phone call from his nephew this evening to say that Brian is in intensive care at Scunthorpe General Hospital after collapsing with a heart attack whilst at a folk event in Scunthorpe yesterday."

I did not know Brian very well but it was always a pleasure to be in his company. My thoughts are with his family.

A huge shock when I received the news at work yesterday morning especially as he had been with us at Tigerfolk, Long Eaton on Sunday 3rd to see Len Graham and to entertain us from the floor (with a Lincolnshire dialect poem for a change). We were all looking forward to seeing him on Sunday night at Nottingham's Poppy Folk Club. All of us at Tigerfolk wish him well for a full recovery and hope to be back in his company soon.

Heard the bad news yesterday from Brian's sister via Mudcatter 'Sooz'. A shock, although I have to say I thought Brian didn't look well when I saw him last Thursday at the monthly '600 Whiskies' folk event at The George in Leadenham.

Brian is a wonderful collector, singer and accordionist, and his knowledge of Lincolnshire songs and tunes is truly encyclopaedic. I wish him a full and speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing and hearing him again, hopefully in the not-too-distant future.

Frank Kelly has set up a conversation group on Facebook to keep people in touch with information about Brian's condition, and the latest news received from the family which he reported earlier this evening was as follows:
"Brian remains very critically ill in ICU, and has yet to regain consciousness. He was taken off sedation but there was no response. The Doctors can give no indication of prognosis at the moment."

Apparently the hospital do not recommend sending cards as Brian is in ICU and cards can prove a dust and germ trap.

Frank also stated "I've proffered the love, good wishes and support of the huge community of people who love Brian, and she is clearly moved by the extent of people's concern from across the country."

Just keeping my fingers crossed for him.

Thank you for all the kind messages received regarding Brian's health. Brian does remain critically ill though is in good hands at Scunthorpe General Hospital intensive care where he has been since Saturday night. I'll try and post occasional updates during the next few days to keep everyone informed. At the moment we can but hope.

Brian has for many years been a stalwart singer, collector and accordionist particularly of Lincolnshire folk song and a band member of the Broadside Band along with John Conolly and others!

Morning all, I'm afraid that it is with great sadness that I must report that Brian remains unconscious and critical in Scunthorpe General since collapsing on the 9th November with a heart attack.

A lovely man and good company, Brian had an uncomplicated singing style that really carried the songs that he sang very well. He was a great source of knowledge about all those iconic Lincolnshire singers that Grainger recorded over a century ago. We were on the same concert/song session line-up at various festivals over the years, most recently at Whitby in August.

Sad news, indeed -- but hope that Brian's family can eventually find some comfort from the knowledge that Brian was held so warmly in the affections of so many people.

IMO that only happens with a 'real' person whose involvement is genuine and comes from a love of what s/he is doing. I only met Brian briefly a couple of times, but was very taken by his love of his music, a very refreshing alternative to current obsessions with 'career path trajectories'.

Very sad news. Condolences to all close friends and family. I have only met Brian briefly over a very long period, sometimes to share knowledge, sometimes to play together. His knowledge of Lincolnshire lore and music was legendary, and I strongly suspect much of this is now lost. A sad loss on so many levels.

I'm saddened to hear this (via the 'Caistor Memories' group on FB) and my thoughts go to his family... I didn't know him that well (I was a kid then), but he kindled an interest in folk music (especially songs from Lincolnshire) in me that has stayed with me. I rememeber Brian (as a member of "The Broadside" folk group) coming to 'interview' my late mum (Violet Corcoran) at our home in Nettleon about the various folk songs she had learned from my grandad (Ned Mumby). I still have the copy of the LP "The Moon Shone Bright" he gave her and I have sung some of the songs from it at various 'folk pubs' in my travels across the country! I even had the honour of singing The Lincolshire Wedding Song at a friends' wedding reception in Bedfordshire. An all-round nice guy! Rest in Peace.

I have been saddened by the number of friends from the folk music world that have passed away in the last couple of years. And now Brian has joined that number. We will all mis this lovely bloke, one of natures gentlemen, and a fine singer/musician/collector to boot. I will always remember his genuine modesty whenever I went to book him for a club or festival that I was running. He would say 'Well, I only sing ditties', and would ask a fee that was ridiculously cheap for an artist of his calibre. There is no-one on the folk scene that I liked better than he, and I know a lot of people. Elaine and I send our condolences to his family. Goodbye,and Thank You for being with us dear Brian. R.I.P.

Thanks to all for such wonderful memories being posted. We had our suspicions over the years of the affection and regard that so many of you clearly held for Brian. We are touched. Only now is it all becoming so obvious. Brian was always so careful to note down in written form his sources of words and music from collecting material over so many years, notoriously on pieces of paper as has been commented on by one observer. It is hoped that one day some of this will be published as a way of preserving part of Brian's legacy. We, along with many others, did keep trying to persuade him to publish more!
We'd be so grateful for any copies of photographs or recordings of Brian performing (along with information of where and when) as these seem quite scarce.
I'll provide an update to advise of funeral arrangements once arrangements are made.

Nearly forty years ago as I was starting out Brian was a huge source of help and encouragement. I still have the copy of O'Neils Music of Ireland which he went through and marked out the tune which were still current (he was a fine fiddle player having had lessons with the wonderful Pat Nealy).

He also introduced to Lincolnshire folk song and folklore and was a mine of information which he was always willing to share.

He was a wonderful man who will be sadly missed. My condolences o his family.

Our paths crossed rarely usually Cullerlie and Whitby but it was always lovely to catch up and to hear Brian sing. A gentleman in every sense of the word. My condolences to his family.

I am saddened indeed to hear the news of his passing.

I did not know Brian personally, but saw him perform several times in the Northwest. I was always struck by his performances and his obvious kindness and interest in Folk music and the people connected with it.

D'you know, I've been following this thread with a nagging suspicion that I'd met Brian somewhere along the way. Over the past few days a memory has slowly been forming of a singaround session at the St. Neots FC Festival when there was this quiet bloke, a stranger to me, sat at the back and playing accordian and singing when it was his turn.

Amongst other songs, I played Lord Franklyn and at the end of the session said stranger came over to say how he'd enjoyed my version. So we got talking about the song and then about how he had travelled from Lincolnshire for the day, which I thought was amazing. Nice bloke, good player, good singer. Could that have been Brian?

So I dug out my little black book to discover that I'd played Lord Franklyn in two consecutive Festivals. Judi was with me in 2003, so it must have been 2002. But did I have any hard evidence?

Turning to "D" in my "folkie" address book there it is: Brian Dawson, complete with his address in Washingborough and his telephone number.
Vic's photo confirmed it. My memory is correct, I've met Brian Dawson.

I can't claim to have known Brian well apart from to talk to and smile at, as our paths didn't cross that much apart from at Sidmouth and Whitby, but I did hear him sing several times in recent years, and certainly had discussion with him about Percy Grainger and his collecting since the topic had some bearing on what I have been up to. I can only echo what everyone else has said ... a gentleman in every sense of the word, with a twinkle in his eye and quite a sense of humour as far as I could tell. Richard,I last heard him singing at Whitby this year, and will send you a couple of photos (not particularly my best) that I took of him singing in the Lincolnshire concert in the Rifle club. I don't know whether you have found the couple of Youtube videos of Brian in action Richard, but this one of Brian singing "Granny's come home from the fair" is probably the one with the best resolution in terms of picture.

A great loss to us all - my condolences to family and friends.

Is there anybody that has all the 3 yellowbellies CD's that I did for charity? I no longer have any of them as I sold out of each version. The reason I ask, is that Brian was on each CD. All the profits after costs went to charity.
I give permission for somebody to send copies of each CD to Richard Smith (Nephew) as a memory.

It must be 45 years ago when a kindly man encouraged me to read a Lincolnshire dialect poem on stage with the Broadside. That kindly man was Brian, and over the years I have continued to read poems alongside Brian singing his songs. Such a sad loss that none of us will see Brian again but his songs and humour will long continue in our memories. A grand gentleman

Firstly, my condolonces to Brain's family in these dark days.

I first met Brian when he played with the Broadside at the legendary Grimsby Folk club at the Lifeboat & Dolphin hotels in Cleethorpes. He performed at the Louth folk club several times during my stewardship of it in the mid -seventies. Always a kind word, always encouraging, an absolute gentleman.

Musically, like many others, I was helped and encouraged by Brian when he used to lead the musicians at Plowgild folk dance club that Malcolm & Penny Hatton used to organise. Brians leadership, playing and coaching were inspirational back then.

One of the most genuine people it has been my privilidge to meet and perform with has passed from us and we are much the poorer at his passing.

First of all, my condolences to Brain's family at this sad time.

I spoke to Brian at Tenterden last month and swapped notes about collecting and archiving, and realised then what a maelstrom Brian was and deservedly given the name Mr Lincolnshire! Our conversation lasted well over an hour and could easily have lasted well into the evening.

His company at the Sidmouth Volunteer will be sorely missed, as I knew I could always rely on him to come up with something raucous or sensitive when the situation demanded.

Condolences to Richard and family. Brian will be sadly missed.I have fond memories of him as support act to the Coleby ploughjag.Scunthorpe museum have a folk display which includes a recording of Brian singing from Percy Graingers collection. It is well worth a visit.

I've finally managed to log on again - it seems that Mudcat was down yesterday at least in Notts. Many of you will be aware from the Radio Lincs folk programme on Wed of funeral arrangements.

Brian's funeral is confirmed for Tuesday 10th December -
1:50 at Lincoln Crematorium (Washingborough Road, Lincoln LN4 1EF) and
2:30 St John's church, High St, Washingborough LN4 1EJ for a celebratory service (3 miles east of Lincoln).

All will be welcome at both or either. We're trying to organise somewhere for a bite and drink afterwards but this is proving tricky thus far...

Thank you all for the wonderful memories of Brian being shared, they are keeping us going. There is a small but growing collection of recordings and photographs being assembled but do please keep these coming. It is dearly hoped to publish Brian's collected works in due course both in written and recorded form. You will all realise that this is no easy task, given Brian's notoriety for writing things down on scraps of paper! That said, he was meticulous in his writing.

My goodness, what an emotional day in bearing witness to such a marvellous response and turnout for Brian's funeral today. The singing in particular at both services was outstanding and at times overwhelming! Thank you to all those who came to Lincoln, Washingborough and Heighington and for messages received from those who couldn't come.
Particular thanks for the ongoing memories, photographs and recordings. Please do keep them coming as we consider (with advice!) how best to publish Brian's legacy.
Thanks too to those who contributed through readings, tributes, songs, baking and helping with refreshments - you know who you are!!
We're confident that Brian might even approve, at least in private.
We look forward to a restful Christmas and then to organising a memorial concert in 2014 (suggestions welcome).
In the meantime, best wishes to all from Brian's family.

Richard, do have a restful Christmas and great idea to have a memorial concert next year. Might I suggest you fix a date fairly quickly then people can put it in their diaries. Venue etc can be sorted bit later. Thanks for your posts.
