I just introduced a visiting friend to the joy of playing at an open mic here in Michigan. He's returning to Chicago and is now looking for open mics closer to home. He sings and plays guitar, does both well. He's not a songwriter. Any recommendations?

If he is not averse to going to the western suburbs, the fox valley folklore society has a song circle on Wednesday nights at the Ballydoyle pub in Aurora. There is an open mic that goes on in the main bar area, but the song circle is in one of the back rooms. It is possible to do both, I suppose. We moved before the song circle started at Ballydoyle, but I went to the circle for years when it was at other venues. The song circle stuff starts around 7:30.
