A little off topic, sorry 'bout that.

I liked to get my kids to help me with stories. I might start with, "Once upon a time there was a big old..." I'd scratch my head until one of them said, "dragon" or "farmer" or "giant". I'd sometimes say something like, "There was only one way to escape and that was..."

Grandpa and Grandma often were major characters in the stories, as were our two dogs.

One night I recall being really sleepy and I guess I must've been drifting off, because I was wakened by two three year olds saying, "Papa, That doesn't make any sense." I guess I kept trying to tell the story, even though I was falling asleep...train of thought.

Not all story songs, but my kids (who are now 37) liked:

Hopalong Peter (PD, learned from NLCR)
I'm Gonna Tell (Rosalie Sorrels)
Barnyard Dance (Carl Martin & Howard Armstrong)

A couple of non-kids songs that they loved me to sing:
Spanish Pipe Dream/Blow Up Your TV (John Prine)
Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys (Patsy & Ed Bruce)

Already mentioned:
Frog Went A Courting (learned from my dad singing it to me)
My dad sang two last verses that I've never heard anyone else sing, but he said that was the way his mom sang it:

They paddled off across the lake, uh huh.
They paddled off across the lake
And got swallered up by a big black snake, uh huh.

Well, that was the end of him and her, uh huh.
That was the end of him and her
Now we won't have tadpoles covered in fur, uh huh.

Two real stories with songs attached that they also liked were The Foolish Frog and Abiyoyo. While they would get me to do these sometimes, they really enjoyed Pete Seeger's versions.

I used to do the same for my nephews when I lived at my sister's for a while many years ago [the elder nephew is now 64, so I mean many years!]. The one they liked best IIRC was Widdecombe Fair. Others were The Fox [mentioned above] & Go Tell Aunt Rhody.

Here it is, much as I remember it.
And there seem to be a lot more in the margin of that youtube page.

Unicorn
Kircudbright centipede
Riding on a camel in the desert
Hippopotamus song
Horsey horsey

If it is getting them to sleep that you need, the words don't matter.
The Band played Waltzing Matilda is long and has the right rhythm. Usually get them to sleep.

I sing a lot of songs to help my 2 1/2 year-old son go to sleep. Favorites for both of us are story-songs like "Froggy went a-courtin", "The fox went out on a chilly night", and "Wynken, blynken, & nod". Can anyone suggest other good (longish) kid-friendly story-songs?
