Mmmm... just got back from a gig and am watching Bonnie on the iPlayer. What a great performer - I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

A disappointing concert. Despite great songs and musicians, like when I saw Bonnie some years ago at the Manchester Apollo, the show lacked something. No real spark and, dare I say it, seemed to be mostly off-key. Even Bonnie's loveliest song 'Love Has No Pride' wasn't a patch on the recorded version and as for Paul Brady's cameo...
That said, BBC4 are doing great work musically when most of the rest of the once wonderful Beeb is so dire.

I own up to being one of those who strongly believe that white folks cannot sing blues convincingly. I tend to ignore the white copyists but knowing that Bonnie has been around a while having played with Fred MacDowell and John Lee Hooker to name just two I wondered if any of the instrumental side of her work would be worth hearing. For my taste it wasn't I found it boring and her voice lacking any passion.
However the following four hours on BBC4 were mostly very, very good.
Following last week's offering and Sunday's programme on Big Bill Broonzy it's been quite a good week.
So congratulations to BBC4 for some decent intelligent programming.

Hoot

Ah well, I have to say that my first few moments of rapture, just after getting back from a gig, were the only few moments of rapture. I ended up not watching all of it because, as others above have said, no real spark.

I quite enjoyed it, thought she was ok to good 6/10.

There's a good Nomeansno song which has the refrain

"White man, you just startin' to get the blues"

Here it is

I thought her playing was good also. I mean, she's not Skip James, or Lightnin' Hopkins, but she's got something. I reckon she's aged well into the music too.

My wife thought it was shite, mind.
