Subject: Lyr Req: It's a Long Way to Cunnamulla - John Den
From: GUEST,Liora
Date: 11 Dec 13 - 09:11 PM

Hi - I'm trying to get the lyrics to It's A Long Way To Cunnamulla by John Dengate.

I have some . . . .

It's a long way to Cunnamulla, It's a long way to go
It's a long way to Cunnamulla. On the River Warrigo
I know there's been a gerrymander and I know it isn't fair
But I have to rely on Cunnamulla - They vote for me there

Mr Bjelke Peterson is a genius, it's true
Mr Bjelke Peterson makes five votes equal two
He divides up the whole electorate, subtracts the goats and gins
Then he multiplies the rural faction . . and that's how he wins

So why not come to sunny Queensland, why not venture forth
Why not join the . . . . . . in that lovely land up north

. . . .and that's as far as I've gotten. I know there's a wonderful verse with reference to Flo Bjelke Peterson.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you - Liora

G'day Liora,

I don't seem to have a text file of this in my travelling hard drive ... but I'll dig it out from my home cludge!

I can't remember if I actually published this in one in of the John Dengate books I've compiled and edited (- the first one was "My Shout!" ...

I think this goes back before I compiled the first - I do remember recording it from John's bracket at the Bush Music Club's "Songs of Members, Past & Present ... ~ mid 1970s ... but it was well established even back then!

Regards,

Bob

G'day again Liora,

I should apologise for not having all the Dengate files closer to hand , but John died only a few weeeks back ... and I'm in the midst of trying to get a lot of Bush Music Club Session / recordings of John's vast repertoire into the Natiuonal Library of Australia / Film & Sound Archive collections ... especially the early John Dengate tapes!

Regards,

Bob

I sourced "My Shout" and typed out the words verbatim for Liora.

So here 'tis:

Cunnamulla                        by John Dengate

[Tune: It's a Long Way to Tipperary]

First verse and chorus:
It's a long way to Cunnamulla, it's a long way to go,
It's a long way to Cunnamulla on the River Warrego.
I know there's been a gerrymander and I know it isn't fair,
But I have to rely on Cunnamulla; they vote for me there.

Mr. Bjelke Petersen is a genius, it's true.
Mr. Bjelke Petersen makes five votes equal two.
He divides up the whole electorate, subtracts Aunt Edna's twins,
And he multiplies the rural fraction and that's how he wins.

Chorus

[Tune: Pack up Your Troubles]

Here is your ticket to the Senate, Flo, That's guile, guile, guile.
Pack up your pumpkin scones and portmanteau; goose-step round the pile.
Tell the mob in Canberra, I waltzed you down the aisle,
So here is your nepotistic ticket, Flo, seig Heil! Heil! Heil!

[Tune: It's a Long Way to Tipperary]

Chorus

Old Caligula the Roman, so the history text books say,
Put his horse into the Senate where it always voted "neigh".
But a horse is still considered useful on the River Warrego,
So! The ancient Romans got an old grey mare and Queensland got Flo.

Chorus

Why not go to sunny Queensland, why not venture forth?
Why not join the Country Party in that lovely land up north?
Ignore the electorate in Brisbane; to hell with Moreton Bay;
As long as you win in Cunnamulla, you'll be O.K.

Chorus

- from "My Shout: Songs and Poems by John Dengate" pub. Bush Music Club, Sydney, Easter, 1982

John used to do a nazi salute on the "seig Heil" words in v3 - don't know if everyone'd be comfortable with that.

From: Bob Bolton

G'day again Liora,

I'm not surprised to see that a number of my old friends have this up on their hard drives ... but I'll drop in my save from the 'master machine' at home ... if only to include my snarky remark on the Queensland (~) 'rip-off' of John's first songbook leaving this one out ...

Regard(les)s,

BOb

IT'S A LONG WAY TO CUNNAMULLA
Words: John Dengate; Tune: Long Way to Tipperary (Most verses)

(1st Verse and Chorus)
It's a long way to Cunnamulla, It's a long way to go,
It's a long way to Cunamulla, on the River Warrego.
I know there's been a gerrymander ... and I know it isn't fair ...
But I have to rely on Cunnamulla – They vote for me there!

(2nd Verse)
(Oh!) Mr Bjelke-Petersen, is a genius – it's true!
Mr Bjelke-Petersen, makes five votes equal two:
He divides up the whole electorate - subtracts the dogs and gins –
Then multiplies the whole electorate ... and that's how he wins!
(Chorus: It's a long way to Cunnamulla)

Tune: Pack up Your Troubles
Here is your ticket to the Senate, Flo, that's guile, guile, guile.
Pack up your pumpkin scones and portmanteau; goose-step round the pile.
Tell the mob in Canberra, I waltzed you down the aisle,
o here is your nepotistic ticket, Flo, sieg Heil! Heil! Heil!
(Chorus: It's a long way to Cunnamulla)

Tune: Long Way to Tipperary
Old Caligula the Roman, so the history text books say,
Put his horse into the Senate where it always voted "neigh".
But a horse is still considered useful on the River Warrego,
So! The ancient Romans got an old grey mare and Queensland got Flo!
(Chorus: It's a long way to Cunnamulla)

Why not go to sunny Queensland, why not venture forth?
Why not join the Country Party in that lovely land up north?
Ignore the electorate in Brisbane; to hell with Moreton Bay;
As long as you win in Cunnamulla, you'll be O.K.
(Chorus: It's a long way to Cunnamulla)

[In 1982 John noted, below the text, * This song keeps growing.]

Source: My Shout! Songs and Poems by John Dengate, Bush Music Club, Easter 1982, pp 16/17

The 1989 Queensland Folk Federation / Maleny Folk Festival 'rip-off' of this publication as My Shout Again! Songs and Poems by John Dengate, (No imprint) did not pick up this quintessentially Queensland ('Cunnamulla') song ... maybe they were still hoping for some sort of Government hand out ...!

I had this song in my head and the only verse other than those above that I remember from the Brisbane Folk Festival circa 1973/74 is;
"Goodbye Brisbane City
Farewell (or to hell with) King George Square
Its a long, long way to Cunnamulla
They vote for me there"
