Your "band" might not include this sort of "folk" would it?

On Spotify, it's called GO ON HOME, and it's on an album called "Rockabilly Classics" (2010) by Sanford Clark.

BMI.com lists Sanford Clark as the writer or co-writer of:

1. BAD CASE OF YOU
2. GO ON HOME
3. HEADING FOR A DOWNFALL
4. I TAKE THIS MAN
5. SQUAD CAR
6. STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO
7. SURE AS THE WIND WILL BLOW

Sanford Clark was moderately popular in the country-folk circles back in the vinyl days.
The sound is poor on the youtube cut.

Sounds like something Johnny Cash might have sung. (I swear I've heard someone either sing it or tell about it.)

It's a VERY weird song

Is it a song you are longing to sing Richard?

The Sanford Clark album "Shades" has this song, "Better Go Home (Throw that blade away)" and 26 more.
Also on his album, "They Call Me Country."

Recorded years ago, these albums are currently out of stock at Amazon .ca and .com (didn't look at UK); try Ebay- saw one used "Shades" there..

Quick work, Guest!

Here's the recording on youTube: Sanford Clark - Better Go Home (Throw That Blade Away)

Richard, is that enough for you to go on to find chart performance for this song?

GO ON HOME
Written by Sanford Clark.
As recorded by Sanford Clark, 1960.

well, you say you're gonna cut me,
Put me six feet under.
Better listen to me, buddy,
To what I've got to say:
I ain't a bad man,
That's plain to see,
But bad men don't mess around with me.

Well, I'm fresh out of prison,
Ten years in San Quentin,
Lost my wife and fam'ly,
Don't feel so nice,
So before you reach
For that blade,
I didn't do that time just for shootin' dice.

I wasn't lookin' for trouble.
I never do,
But the man I killed
Acted just like you.

Well, I had a little boy
Like the one you've got.
Though you ain't much,
I guess you're all he's got.
You better go home,
Just walk away,
Better go home and throw that blade away.

Trying to trace/remember the name of a song, and who recorded it and what its chart performance was....

It goes:

"Well, you say you're going to cut me, put me 6 feet under.
Better listen to me buddy, to what I got to say
I ain't a bad man, that's plain to see
But bad men don't mess around with me

You better go home, just walk away
You'd better go home and throw that blade away"
