Subject: Sally is doing better From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 16 Nov 99 - 03:12 AM Thanks to all of you who have been sending thoughts, prayers, psychic healing energies to my friend Sally. She seemed definitely improved today: Charlie went to see her twice, and both times she was awake and responding, even answering yes or no questions (when I went she was asleep--or maybe just pretending; she may have had enough of my banjo and was faking sleep so I'd go away [those of you who have been expressing awe at my goodness should realize that I just haven't been able to resist a captive audience], or maybe it was just nappy time. The group met tonight and taped a bunch of songs for her. I was late--I don't know how many they had taped before I got there, but when I came in they were doing "Soldier's Joy" and I was able to get my C harmonica out in time to play the last break. Then we did "Columbus Stockade Blues," in which I also play harmonica breaks, then "Free Grace" for which I switched to banjo and sang bass and I sang "Jimmy Brown" and Charlie, Josh, Walter and I traded breaks. Sally's daughter and sister were there along with several friends, and Markd--the acupuncturist--and his wife, and after we sang we made a circle and projected our thoughts to her--I told the group about all the Muddies who were doing likewise. Again, I can't say she's out of the woods, but she seems to have found a bit of sunny meadow, and maybe the trees are thinning out, if she can keep moving in the right direction maybe we'll have her back with us soon. The nurses and doctors in the ICU have been terrific: when I go back on Wednesday I think I'll take a couple pounds of See's chocolates for them. I love you all, --seed |

Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Nov 99 - 07:34 AM Glad to hear the news is better Seed. She MUST be doing better since her reaction to you was sleep, since it is a well known but little mentioned fact that you are boring beyond belief! In my experience, I've found that ICU people are very dedicated pros and inveterate junk food addicts, all protestations to the contrary. I've always gone back with food too ... its hard to tell them sometimes just how much you appreciate their skills and caring. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: Áine Date: 16 Nov 99 - 10:21 AM That's great, great news, 'Seed! When you take the chocs to the ICU folks, be sure and pull your hand back real quick -- Lord knows they need the stuff to handle all the things they have to do, bless 'em. Your Sally is very lucky to have such good folks taking care of her there at the hospital, and such good friends like you taking care of her, too. -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: Banjer Date: 16 Nov 99 - 09:15 PM It was no doubt the banjo playing that created the healing atmosphere....Glad to hear the good news, Seed, still keeping Sally and you and all the good folks that are pulling for her in our prayers...... |
Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: sophocleese Date: 16 Nov 99 - 10:37 PM We're still thinking about you and Sally Bseed. Glad to hear that things, and she, are looking up. Chocolates for the doctors and nurses is a terrific idea. |
Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 17 Nov 99 - 02:14 AM Things really seem to happen to that family: Bebe, Sally's daughter, has been staying at her house--she was hostess of our song/healing circle last night. After we left, she fell and broke her wrist, and possibly her hip (although only 40, she is nearly crippled with osteoporosis, so it doesn't take much of a fall to break her bones. She is Sally's only child--and Bebe's only child, Jennifer, was raped and murdered eight or ten years ago when she was 12 years old. This is part of what I meant when I said in my first posting of the first thread that Sally has had more than enough rotten stuff happen in her life--yet it just keeps piling up. Sally is a member of the board of directors of MVFF, Murder Victims' Family and Friends opposed to the death penalty. --seed |
Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Nov 99 - 06:50 AM Well geeziz, I guess she HAS had more than her share. Is Bebe doing OK Seed? Seems like they could use a break somewhere doesn't it? I never see an explanation of why these things happen that satisfies me...no justice. Isn't Sam Reece Sheppard on the board of that group too. Strikes me that is one he's active in. I think he's still living in your neck of the woods. I've met him a couple times here a few years ago when the excessively anal State of Ohio was still refusing to completely clear his Dad. Technically they have now, but they're still carping about it. Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 17 Nov 99 - 12:01 PM The news on Bebe is a bit better: no broken hip after all, but Sally was a bit less responsive Tuesday than Wednesday. I'm going to try to squeeze a quick visit with her between my last student and my retinal surgeon (I had a couple of small tears repaired via laser surgery--my eye is about back to normal). This is my second checkup, and all is looking good. You're right, Spaw, Sam is on the board. And he lives in Oakland, ten miles north of me, and works as a dental hygienist. He came to one of our sessions at Sally's house a couple of years ago--he plays guitar. Nice guy, showing the strain of a lifetime of trying to get justice for Dr. Sam. --seed |

Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: katlaughing Date: 17 Nov 99 - 03:47 PM WOW, two of you who have met Sam. I have had a vivid interest in his case and followed it closely for quite awhile. I foudn his book fascinating and compelling. I have so much empathy and respect for him and his quest. Bseed, good to know her hips is okay. Lotta tragedy there; sounds like this family deserves some smooth sailing. Anything we can do to help that along, we'll do. Good and positive thoughts and prayers to Sally and all of you who love her. kat |
Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: Áine Date: 17 Nov 99 - 04:13 PM Dear 'Seed, Ups and downs should be expected with a condition this serious, but don't give up hope that she will completely recover. Time is the best healer, after all. Our continued prayers are with you and Sally and her family. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Sally is doing better From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 17 Nov 99 - 10:48 PM Sally's sister, Sylvia, talked with her doctor at about 1 p.m. today and reported that Sally had been in a coma for two days, but Walter (our piano player) saw her two hours later. He sent us this email: I stopped by to visit Sally at 3 pm this afternoon. Mark was there, waiting to see her doctor, so they could do the acupuncture. I took Sally's hand and said hello to her, and she opened her eyes a bit, which really surprised Mark, who had not expected a response at all. Then as I held her hand and talked to her, and Mark did some acupressure, she opened her eyes several times, and two or three times had them wide open for quite a while. Her expression did not change, but I'm sure she was taking it in. So things are not quite as bad as they seemed, but still not good. In a later email Sylvia said that Bebe was "in pain and disgusted with herself," I guess for being careless and hurting herself when her mother needed her. Sylvia hasn't said if Bebe is with her or still in the hospital. I'll call her after a while to find out what I can. Sylvia also said Sally is going to be moved--to another facility, but she didn't specify what it was to be. She was also going to have another spinal before she was moved. I'm not thinking too clearly these days it seems: I placed Sam Sheppard 10 miles north of me. Oakland is, of course, south of El Cerrito. --seed |
