I know what you mean, Mr H. That version in particular seems not only greatly different from both versions I know but particularly miserable! I think I have found a version that is not too different by a chap called Tim Griffin here - Thanks Tim :-) I think I could work on that or something similar.

IMO Bellamy's tune is far superior to the usual one

I've learned two versions of a capella songs, so I think playing may follow the same lines.

I spend time listening to the "newer" version & singing along until I can do it by rote. I then pick a memorable phrase with a unique sound that I use as my cue to pick out the tune, since I don't use sheet music when I sing. I hope this is clear.

Singing & playing both use body memory to set yourself up for a song, so you need to learn two separate cues for two different versions... otherwise you never can be certain which one will come out...lol.

After you master the newer version, then you try switching back to the first. You should be able to switch between versions after a bit of practice. good luck!

The tune in question is 10,000 miles away / Road to Mandalay. I learned Peter Bellamy's version of The Road to Mandalay many years ago and found out a long time later that it was derived from 10,000 miles away. I would like to play the latter but find it very difficult to change. It is quite subtle in places but noticeable. Any tips or should I just not go there and stick to the one I know? I currently play it on accordion but could, I suppose, try to get to grips with it on concertina. Think that could make a difference?

BTW - It is not the Bellowhead version of 10,000 miles away I am trying to learn - That is different again!
